VANDERBILT NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. — Fresh from winning its first national baseball championship with a 3-2 win over Virginia, Vanderbilt is ranked No. 1 in the final 2014 Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division I baseball poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum.
Vanderbilt finished the season with a 51-21 record and had never won a men’s national championship until now. The school’s only national championship took place in 2007 with women’s bowling.
The Commodores swiped 17 of 23 bases over seven games at the College World Series and accounted for more than half of all stolen bases in the tournament.
John Norwood came through with a solo home run in the eighth inning to win it for Vanderbilt in the championship game. It was the Commodores’ first home run in the past 17 games and only the third home run of the season for Norwood. Norwood was 3-for-3 in the title game with a walk and the biggest RBI of his life with a home run.
What made the circuit clout even more amazing was that only three home runs were hit in 16 games during the College World Series.
The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1959 college baseball season.
