Collegiate Baseball HS Poll (6-7-22)

ST MARY’S NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — With a perfect 39-0 record, St. Mary’s Prep (Orchard Lake, MI) remains No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball’s National High School Poll powered by Diamond Pro.

It is the ninth straight Collegiate Baseball poll St. Mary’s Prep has been on top in 2022.

The Eaglets completed the regular season and won the district title with wins over Auburn Hills Avondale, 15-1 and West Bloomfield, 11-1. They advance to the regional and will play Lakeland.

St. Mary’s  Prep has won 61 consecutive games dating back to last season.

The team has posted a .356 batting average led by Ike Irish (.448, 9 2B, 10 HR, 40 RBI), Nolan Schubart (.324, 6 2B, 2 3B, 11 HR, 36 RBI), Jake Dresselhouse (.402, 10 2B, 4 3B, 7 HR, 39 RBI) and Blake Grimmer (.364, 10 2B, 1 3B, 7 HR, 44 RBI).

The pitching staff has a 1.16 ERA. Top pitchers include Brad Porter (7-0, 0.45 ERA, 20 BB, 95 K, 46.2 IP), Ciaran Caughey (8-0, 0.55 ERA, 20 BB, 64 K, 38 IP) and Aidan Donovan (7-0, 0.72 ERA, 8 BB, 29 K, 29.1 IP).

No. 2 Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, FL) 30-2 F, Florida 7A state champions.

No. 3 Sumrall (Sumrall, MS) captured the Mississippi 4A state title with an 11-4 win over Pontotoc and finished with a 35-1 record. It was the first state title for the Bobcats since 2015.

Andrew Knight, who came into the game with an 8-1 record, gave up 4 runs in the first two innings. But from the third through sixth innings, he allowed just two hits and no runs before giving the ball to reliever Brycen Smith since he reached his 120-pitch limit.

He allowed 7 hits, 4 runs and struck out 7 in 6 innings. Cade Dedeaux led the offense, going 3-for-4 with 2 RBI.

No. 4 Providence (Charlotte, NC) was undefeated (34-0) and captured the North Carolina 4A state title by defeating Pinecrest (Southern Pines, NC), 3-0 and 3-1.

The Panthers are the first 4A team in the state to go undefeated in a season and win the title. They broke their 2015 record for wins.

In game two, Michael Forret allowed 3 hits, 1 run and struck out 12 in 7.2 innings of work.

No. 5 North Oconee (Bogart, GA) 39-1 F, Georgia 4A state champions.

No. 6 Northwest Rankin (Brandon, MS) defeated DeSoto Central two of three games to capture the Mississippi 6A state title. It was the first state championship since 2005, and they finished 34-3.

The Cougars won the first game, 9-4, lost the second, 11-3 and won the third, 3-2.

Nick Monistere was named Mississippi’s Player of the Year by the MHSAA coaches. He hit .422 with 13 doubles, 3 triples, 8 home runs, 37 RBI and stole 18 bases. On the mound, he was 11-1 with a 1.25 ERA, 22 walks, 115 strikeouts in 73 innings.

No. 7 Rockwall-Heath (Heath, TX) remains alive in the Texas 6A regionals. They recently defeated Oak Ridge (Conroe, TX) 8-2 and 8-0, then won two of three against Rockwall. They play Reagan (San Antonio, TX) next in the tournament.

The Hawks are 32-6.

New to the poll at No. 8 is De La Salle (Concord, CA) which defeated California’s top-ranked team, St. Francis (Mountain View, CA), 7-6 to capture the CIF Nor Cal Division 1 title.

Two errors and a hit batter in the bottom of the seventh opened the door for De La Salle to help win the game. The Spartans finished 27-6.

No. 9 Huntington Beach, CA defeated JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, CA), 2-0 to win the CIF SoCal Division 1 Regional Championship. The Oilers finished 25-9.

Matt Lopez tossed seven shutout innings, scattering 9 hits and striking out 4.

No. 10 Hamilton (Chandler, AZ) 29-4 F, Arizona 6A state champs.

No. 11 Hanover (Mechanicsville, VA) advanced in the Class 4A state tournament. The Hawks (20-2) won the Region 4B title by defeating Monacan, 4-0. They will face Warhill (VA) in the state quarterfinals.

Cannon Peebles struck out 7 batters and gave up no hits in the first three innings of the game. Marcus Van Alstine and Seth Keller combined to throw 4 innings with no runs allowed.

No. 12 Georgetown (TX) knocked W.B. Ray out of the Texas 5A tournament with 2 wins, 4-2 and 7-2. They went on to defeat Pioneer (Mission, TX), 4-0 and 2-1 in 10 innings and now face Wakeland (Frisco, TX) in the state tournament. They are 32-7.

No. 13 George Washington (New York, NY) is headed into the NYC AAA championship after defeating Inwood Campus, 3-2 and 2-1 in the semi-finals. They are 31-4.

In the five post-season games, Leo Espinal is leading the pitching staff with 2 wins and 1 earned run allowed in 12.1 innings pitched.

No. 14 Hartselle, AL (39-4) captured the Alabama 6A state title, defeating Pelham, 5-1 and 10-2. It was the Tigers’ first state baseball title since 2013 and ninth overall.

Will Turner was named MVP of the championship series. Elliott Bray pitched 4 innings in the final game, allowing 1 hit and an earned run. He walked 3 and struck out 8. Jack Smith came in for relief, allowing 2 hits, an earned run, 1 walk and fanned 4 batters in three innings.

Coach William Booth has been the Tigers’ coach for all nine state championships, and he has over 1,100 career wins with the program.

No. 15 Doral Academy (Doral, FL) 26-4-1 F, Florida 6A champions.

No. 16 West Monroe (LA) 33-4 F, Louisiana 5A state champions.

No. 17 Charlotte Christian (Charlotte, NC) won its 17th 4A NCISAA title by beating Metrolina Christian Academy, 7-3 and 7-3. It is the Knights’ third title in a row. They finished 30-3.

No. 18 Carlsbad (NM) 27-4 F, New Mexico 5A state champs.

No. 19 Mason (OH) defeated Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati, OH), 4-1 in the Ohio Division 1 regional finals to knock them out of the tournament. Brenden Garula went the distance against the Crusaders, allowing only 2 hits and 1 unearned run. He improved his record to 9-0.

Mason is 27-4 and will play Grove City in the state semi-finals.

No. 20 Ridge Point (Missouri City, TX) enters the poll after advancing in the regional playoffs with 10 wins in 12 games. The Panthers beat Strake Jesuit (Houston, TX), 3-0 and 2-1 and face Southlake Carroll next in the 6A playoffs. They are 35-5.

No. 21 Sinton (TX) has a 30-game win streak entering into the Texas 4A semi-finals where they will face Celina (TX).

The Pirates (35-1) defeated highly touted Calallen (Corpus Christi, TX), 3-1 to advance in the tournament.

No. 22 Berkeley Prep (Tampa, FL) lost to North Broward Prep, 5-3 and are the runners-up in the Florida 3A tournament. They finished 28-4.

No. 23 W.B. Ray (Corpus Christi, TX) lost to Georgetown (TX), 4-2 and 7-2 in the regional semi-finals. They ended the season with a 36-6 record.

No. 24 Legacy (Broomfield, CO) came through the loser’s bracket and lost to Broomfield (CO), 7-6 in the Colorado 5A championship game. They finished 27-4.

No. 25 Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati, OH) lost to Mason, 4-1 in the Elite 8 Round of Ohio’s Division 1 tournament. They finished 29-3.

No. 26 JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, CA) lost to Huntington Beach (CA), 2-0 to finish second in CIF Southern Section Div. 1 with a 25-11 overall record.

No. 27 Orange Lutheran (Orange, CA) 25-5 F, knocked out of CIF Southern Section tournament.

No. 28 Calvary Christian (Clearwater, FL) 26-2 F, knocked out of Florida 4A tournament.

No. 29 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) 35-6 F, runners up in Nevada 5A.

No. 30 Blythewood (SC) 30-3 F, runners-up in South Carolina’s Upper State championships.

Teams that fell out of the poll include The First Academy (Orlando, FL), Tompkins (Katy, TX), American Heritage (Plantation, FL), Villa Park (CA), Reno (NV), Allatoona (Acworth, GA), Hewitt-Trussville, AL), and Barbe (Lake Charles, LA).
