ST MARY’S NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. — St. Mary’s Prep (Orchard Lake, MI) is ranked No. 1 for the fifth straight Collegiate Baseball National High School Poll presented by Diamond Pro.
The Eaglets, 6-0, have been on a roll since the 2021 season when they won 22 straight games to close the season and captured the Michigan Division 2 title. They now have a 28-game win streak.
In the first 6 games of 2022, the Eaglets have belted 20 home runs and outscored opponents 84-8 in the process. Top hitters include Ike Irish (.727, 6 HR), Ryan McKay (.667 BA) and Jack Crighton (.588 BA).
The pitching staff have thrown 3 no-hitters against Detroit Catholic Central, 10-0, Univ. of Detroit Jesuit, 15-0 and 13-0.
No. 2 Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, FL) captured the National High School Invitational title in Cary, N.C. The Eagles (16-2) defeated DH Conley (NC) 15-0, Yucaipa (CA) 12-1, Orange Lutheran (CA) 11-0 and St Johns Country Day (FL) 5-3 to claim the championship.
Chris Arroyo was named the tournament MVP after hitting .667 and going 1-0 with a save on the mound. Jack Clemente threw five innings in the 11-0 win over Orange Lutheran and struck out five.
No. 3 Sumrall (MS) is 21-0 and 8-0 in league play. In the last 6 games, Bobcat pitchers have thrown three shutouts and outscored opponents, 60-4. Levi Odom struck out 8 in a 12-0 victory against Forrest County Agricultural.
No. 4 Barbe (Lake Charles, LA) is 27-2 and went 5-1 over the last two weeks. Top pitchers for the past 6 games include RHP Landon Victorian (2 R, 5 H, 21 K, 15 IP) and LHP Diego Corrales (5 R, 5 H, 13 K, 10 IP).
No. 5 Rockwall-Heath (Rockwall, TX) is 17-3 and ranked No. 1 in the Texas 6A poll. During a 14-1 win over Horn (Mesquite, TX), Jonny Lowe drove in 7 runs with a grand slam and two doubles.
No. 6 Orange Lutheran (Orange, CA) went 3-1 at the National High School Invitational and sports an 18-3 overall record. The Lancers remain No. 1 in California polls.
At the NHSI, the Lancers beat Hanover (VA) 6-3, Basic (NV) 2-0, lost to Stoneman Douglas (FL) 11-0 and beat McQuaid Jesuit (NY) 7-3. Louis Rodriguez tossed a complete game shutout over Basic and struck out three.
No. 7 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, CA) is 20-0 with an 8-0 Gold Coast League record. Pitchers have thrown 8 shutouts so far.
No. 8 Berkeley Prep (Tampa, FL) also is undefeated with an 18-0 record. Cade Kurland (Florida signee) leads the offense with 9 home runs.
No. 9 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) is 20-1. The pitching staff has fired 8 shutouts and has posted two recent wins over Centennial (NV) 14-0 and Arbor View (NV) 11-0.
Easton Shelton has been on fire at the plate, hitting .429 with 7 homers, 5 doubles, 2 triples and 26 RBI.
No. 10 Tompkins (Katy, TX) is 21-1, dropping its first game recently against Katy (TX), 5-2. The team has dropped slightly in Texas state polls, however. In the last six games, the Falcons have outscored opponents, 63-12.
The pitching staff has a team ERA of 1.48 while the hitters have a team on-base percentage of .507. Jace LaViolette hit for the cycle in a 23-0 win over Morton Ranch (TX). He his batting .661 with 7 doubles, 11 triples and 7 homeruns.
No. 11 Providence (Charlotte, NC) remains perfect with a 15-0 record. The Panthers recently defeated Audrey Kell (NC) 6-1, Rocky River (Mint Hill, NC) 12-0 and 15-0 and Independence (Charlotte, NC) 11-1.
No. 12 Central Martinsburg (Martinsburg, PA) kicked off its season 2-0 with wins over Penn Cambria, 11-1 and Central Cambria, 19-1.
No. 13 The First Academy (Orlando, FL) is 15-3. They had a big win over Huntington Beach (CA) 13-8 in the National High School Invitational, however lost two other games in the tournament against Basic (NV) and Hanover (VA).
No. 14 Reno (NV) is 18-2. Grayson Grinsell struck out 14 batters during an 8-0 win over Spanish Springs (NV). Eric Nachtsheim earned his sixth win of the season in a 14-0 victory over Carson (NV).
No. 15 Hamilton (Chandler, AZ) is 15-3. The Huskies also played in the NHSI tournament with wins over Bishop Verot (FL) and Buford (GA) and lost 2-1 in 8 innings against Huntington Beach (CA).
No. 16 Yucaipa (CA) went 2-1 in the NHSI tournament and is 15-3 overall. The Thunderbirds are 9-1 in the Citrus Belt League. The team heads to the Boras Classic next week.
No. 17 Buford (GA) saw its 20-game winning streak snapped, losing three straight in the NHSI to teams that also were nationally ranked. The Wolves are 20-3 with a 15-0 record in league play.
No. 18 Allatoona (Acworth, GA) also had its 20-game winning streak broken, losing to Pope (Marietta, GA) 5-1 and Windermere (FL) 11-5 recently. They are 22-2 overall.
No. 19 Walsh Jesuit (Cuyahoga Falls, OH) kicked off its season with a 5-0 record. They won the PBR Jerry Baumgartner HS Invitational and the Cuyahoga Falls City Classic Tournament. Mason Eckelman was named the MVP of the Baumgartner tournament.
No. 20 Calvary Christian (Clearwater, FL) is 15-1 with its only loss to Tampa Jesuit (FL) 5-4 in 8 innings.
No. 21 Christian Brothers College (St. Louis, MO) is 10-1 with a recent loss to Jackson, 1-0.
No. 22 Hewitt-Trussville (Trussville, AL) has a 22-1-1 record. Pitching has been outstanding. Riley Quick has thrown two no-hitters, a 1-hitter, three 2-hitters and 5 shutouts. He is 8-0 with a save, 0.64 ERA, 74 strikeouts in 44 innings. Opponents are only hitting .155 against him.
Baker Green has thrown a 1-hitter and two 2-hitters. He currently has thrown 37 2/3 scoreless innings which is the third longest in state history, according to Coach Jeff Mauldin. He is 7-0 with a 0.15 ERA, 74 strikeouts, 45 2/3 innings. Opponents are hitting .199. Jacob Francis also has thrown a no-hitter.
New to the poll at No. 23 is St. Johns Country Day (Orange Park, FL) with a 12-2 record. The Spartans went 2-1 in the NHSI, losing the championship game to Stoneman Douglas, 5-3. Earlier in the season, they lost to Buford (GA), 8-7.
No. 24 Corpus Christi Ray (TX) is 22-3 and are 10-0 in District play. The Texans are ranked No. 1 in the Texas 5A baseball coaches poll.
No. 25 La Cueva (Albuquerque, NM) is 15-1 with its only loss to Volcano Vista (NM), 3-2. The Bears have an 8-game win streak.
No. 26 Trinity (Louisville, KY) is 12-1. Their only loss was against Male (KY), 5-3 as they have moved to the top of the state poll.
Hanover (Mechanicsville, VA) is No. 27 after losing two games in the NHSI tournament with a 4-2 record. They won one game against The First Academy (FL), 9-2 in 10 innings and lost to two California teams.
No. 28 Rogers (AR) is 14-2 after defeating Willard, the top team in Missouri 5A, 12-4 and Bentonville West, 5-4 and 10-5.
No. 29 Lake Travis (Austin, TX) has an 11-game win streak and is 20-3-3. The Cavaliers are No. 2 in the Texas 6A High School polls.
No. 30 Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, CA) is 15-5-1 and recently dropped 3 games. They have two Mission League series left against Alemany and Chaminade.
Teams that fell out of the poll include Owasso (OK) 19-5, Servite (Anaheim, CA) 9-8, Rio Rancho (NM) 18-3, Santa Margarita (CA) 16-6 and Don Bosco Prep (NJ) 3-2.
