TAMPA JESUIT NO. 1 IN CB’S HIGH SCHOOL POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. — Jesuit (Tampa, FL) is ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball’s latest National High School Poll, powered by Diamond Pro.
The Tigers are 14-0 with recent wins over Sickles (Tampa, FL) 5-2 in the Saladino Tournament, St. Louis University (MO), 8-0 and Hollins (St. Petersburg, FL), 12-3. They have outscored opponents 109-27 over 14 games.
The pitching staff has a 1.71 team ERA led by junior RHP Aden Knowles who has 4 wins, 0.84 ERA, 25 strikeouts and 7 walks in 24 2/3 innings. The team is hitting .328. Top batters include seniors OF Wes Mendez (.455, 5 2B, 12 RBI, 9 SB), C Josh Hines (.444, 6 2B, 10 RBI) and MIF Grant Jordan (3 HR, 5 SB).
No. 2 Barbe (Lake Charles, LA) split 2 games against rival Sam Houston (LA), winning 3-1 and losing 4-2. The Buccaneers are now 22-1.
Donovan Lasalle leads the offense with a .556 batting average, 9 doubles, 3 triples, 3 home runs, 23 RBI and 16 stolen bases. Top pitchers include RHP Landon Victoria (0.72 ERA, 55 K, 0 BB, 29 IP) and LHP JC Vanek (0.70 ERA, 39 K, 5 BB, 30 IP).
No. 3 Calvary Christian (Clearwater, FL) sits at 11-1. In recent games, the Warriors blanked Seminole, 5-0, Countryside 10-0, Cardinal Mooney 10-0 and Northeast 6-1, all Florida schools.
No. 4 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) is 9-1 after winning the Boras Classic Arizona tournament. The Gaels went through the tournament with 4 straight wins, beating Casteel (AZ) 9-5, Canyon View (AZ) 8-3, Reno (NV) 10-0 and Sandra Day O’Connor (AZ) 7-5 in the title game.
Easton Shelton was named MVP and Kaden Soder was selected Most Valuable Pitcher in the championship game. Gorman’s only loss of the season was against Desert Oasis (NV), 2-1. The Gaels will participate in the National High School Classic in Cary, N.C., then return to host the All-Faiths Classic.
No. 5 Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, FL) remains undefeated with a 13-0 record. The Eagles have a superb pitching staff which features a 0.68 team ERA. Top pitchers include RHP Christian Rodriguez (4-0, 0.69 ERA, 3 BB, 40 K, 20.1 IP), RHP Jayden Dubanewicz (4-0, 1.59 ERA, 3 BB, 27 K, 22 IP) and RHP Gavin Garguilo (3-0, 0.54 ERA, 4 BB, 20 K, 13 IP).
No. 6 Sinton (TX) is 18-1 and ranked No. 1 in the Texas 4A poll. Recently LHP Jaquae Stewart tossed a no-hitter in a 20-0 win over Ingleside (TX). He struck out 7 over 5 innings of work.
No. 7 Houston County (Warner Robins, GA) is 18-1 and features 4 hitters who are batting over .460 with a combined 119 RBI. They include Drew Burress (.484, 10 2B, 2 3B, 8 HR, 35 RBI), Andrew Dunford (.556, 7 2B, 2 3B, 6 HR, 28 RBI), Eli Stephens (.483 (8 2B, 1 3B, 25 RBI) and Kai Decker (.466, 9 2B, 1 3B, 31 RBI).
No. 8 St. Mary’s Prep (Orchard Lake, MI) won its season opener against Howell (MI), 5-4. The victory extends the team’s current win streak to 67. RHP Grant Essig struck out 6 in 3 innings for the win while Blake Grimmer hit 2 doubles in the game.
No. 9 Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, CA) is the top team in the Los Angeles area with a 14-1 record. The Knights recently swept Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, CA) three games and Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, CA) 3 games.
In a 4-2 win over Sierra Canyon, Levi Sterling drove in 4 runs while Justin Lee struck out 8 in 5 innings.
Moving up to No. 10 is Westlake (Austin, TX) with a 20-1 record. The Chaparrals have a 15-game win streak that includes recent wins over Lake Travis (TX), 5-4 and 2-1 and Del Valle (TX), 7-1 and 11-1. They are 5-0 in district play and ranked No. 1 in the Texas 6A poll.
No. 11 Archbishop McCarthy (Fort Lauderdale, FL) is 12-1 with a recent 10-0 loss to IMG Academy. They are set to play Stoneman Douglas next.
No. 12 Basic Academy (Henderson, NV) remains undefeated a 10-0 record. In a 15-2 win over Green Valley (NV), Tate Southisene went 2-for-5 with a grand slam.
No. 13 Liberty North (Liberty, MO) kicked off its season with a 5-0 record. The pitching staff has posted 3 shutouts and have allowed just 4 runs in 5 games. Combined, they have struck out 53 batters and only walked 9 in 29 innings. They have outscored opponents, 49-4.
No. 14 De La Salle (Concord, CA) is 7-1. The Spartans only loss has been to Whitney (Rocklin, CA), 6-5.
No. 15 Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, NJ) starts on April 9.
No. 16 Villa Park (CA) is 10-2 after a recent loss to El Dorado (Placentia, CA), 3-2. In a 10-0 win over Canyon (Anaheim, CA), LHP Brandon Luu gave up no runs on 2 hits with 13 strikeouts in 6 innings of work. On the season, Luu is 3-1 with a 0.75 ERA, 11 walks and 39 strikeouts in 28 innings.
New to the poll at No. 17 is Carlsbad (CA) with a 9-0 record. The Lancers are the top team in San Diego Section Div. 1. They have outscored opponents, 70-11 in 9 games.
No. 18 Prestonwood Academy (Plano, TX) is 20-1-1 and is the top team in the Texas Private School poll. In wins over Evangel (Shreveport, LA) and Trinity Christian (Addison, TX). LHP Xavier Mitchell struck out 24 batters over 2 games.
No. 19 Friendswood (TX) has a 16-2-2 after playing all Texas 6A teams during the pre-season tournaments. The team is ranked No. 1 in the Texas 5A poll.
No. 20 St. Xavier (Louisville, KY) kicked off its season with a 5-1 record. The only loss has been to Lexington Catholic (KY), 6-4. The Tigers will soon head for Cary, N.C. for the National High School Invitational.
No. 21 is Hamilton (Chandler, AZ) with a 12-3 record. During the Boras Classic Arizona, the Huskies went 2-2. Over the last six games, Roch Cholowsky has gone 11-for-20 with 8 RBI and 6 runs scored.
No. 22 Sulphur (LA) is 20-2. Last week the Tors played 5 games on the road and outscored opponents, 51-11.
After losing its first game of the season, No. 23 Blessed Trinity (Roswell, GA) has posted an 18-game winning streak.
Leading the pitching staff are Jake Lankie (4-0, 0.99 ERA, 36 K), Porter Buursema (3-1, 0.48 ERA, 47 K) and Evan O’Neill (5-0, 0.73 ERA, 39 K). Top hitters include Kade Kisz (.449, 2 HR, 16 RBI, 20 R), Cooper Milford (.365, 20 SB, 24 R) and Cole Harof (.432, 5 2B, 10 RBI).
No. 24 Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati, OH) opened its season with an 8-1 win over Strongsville (OH). Kellan Klosterman, Zion Theophilus and Carson Marsh combined for a no-hitter. Toby Hueber went 3-for-4 and stole 4 bases.
No. 25 Jesuit (Portland, OR) kicked off its season with a 3-0 record. One win was against West Linn, the No. 2 ranked team in Oregon, 9-6. In a 4-0 win over Sprague, Noble Meyer went 6 innings, allowing 2 hits, 1 walk and struck out 14. Meyer boasted a 0.00 ERA and 24 strikeouts over 10 innings.
New to the poll at No. 26 is Thompson (Alabaster, AL) with a 22-2 record. The Warriors recently saw its 20-game win streak snapped with losses to Spain Park (Hoover, AL), 5-4 and Oak Mountain (Birmingham, AL), 2-0, but have since bounced back with wins.
No. 27 Catholic (Baton Rouge, LA) is 21-2. Recently they went 2-1 in a series against Mandeville. They won the first two games 1-0 and 3-0 and lost the third game, 6-5.
No. 28 Aquinas (San Bernardino, CA) is 6-1 heading into the National High School Invitational tournament.
Dropping to No. 29 is Eastlake (Chula Vista, CA) with an 8-1 record. The Titans dropped a 7-2 game to Granite Hills recently.
No. 30 is Broken Arrow (OK) which started its season 11-1 and 4-0 in district play. The Tigers are set to play in the BA/Jenks Classic with several other top teams from Oklahoma.
Teams that fell out of the poll include Jackson Prep (Jackson, MS), Brother Rice (Chicago, IL) and Edwardsville (IL).
Teams to watch include Sam Houston (Lake Charles, LA) 20-1, TC Roberson (Asheville, NC) 8-0, Santa Margarita Catholic (CA), 11-2, and Concordia Lutheran (Tomball, TX) 20-1.
