Collegiate Baseball HS Poll (3-28-22)

ST MARY’S NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — St. Mary’s Prep (Orchard Lake, MI) is ranked No. 1 for the fourth straight Collegiate Baseball National High School Poll of 2022 presented by Diamond Pro.

St. Mary’s Prep will play its season opener March 30.

The Eaglets return a powerful ball club that went 43-1 last season and were ranked No. 1 nationally by Collegiate Baseball after winning the Michigan Division 2 state title.

It was their second consecutive Michigan state title as St. Mary’s ended the season with 22 straight victories. Seventeen players return with 12 NCAA Division I commits and 7 who were starters last year.

Buford (GA) moved up to No. 2 after starting the season 17-0. Since winning the La Grange (GA) Invitational, the Wolves have won 3 straight regional series, outscoring opponents 88-19 in 9 games.

No. 3 Tompkins (Katy, TX) is 17-0 and moved to No. 1 in the Texas 6A baseball polls. The Falcons have outscored opponents 171-30 while posted a team ERA of 1.37 and team on-base percentage of .513.

CF Jace Laviolette is leading the offense with a .643 batting average, 20 extra-base hits including 9 triples and 6 home runs. UT Jack Little (.519, 8 2B, 16 SB) and SS Drew Markle (.393, 25 RS) also are top contributors.

No. 4 Barbe (Lake Charles, LA) suffered its first loss to Sam Houston (LA), 19-1 after beating them 6-0 in an earlier game. They are 22-1.

In the 6-0 victory over Sam Houston, Gavin Guidry went 7 innings, allowing 3 hits, no runs and striking out 13.

In a 6-0 victory over Sulphur (LA), sophomore Landon Victorian tossed a 4 hitter, allowing no runs, no walks and striking out 7 in 7 innings.

No. 5 The First Academy (Orlando, FL) has upped its winning streak to 34 games dating back to last season. They are 12-0 in 2022.

Top players this season include Greg Pettay who was hitting .650 with 4 home runs and 17 RBI and Isaac Sewell who is 4-0 with a 0.52 ERA, 3 walks, 33 strikeouts in 26 2/3 innings. Pitchers have thrown 7 shutouts so far.

No. 6 Orange Lutheran (Orange, CA) remains the top team in California and the Los Angeles area with a 12-2 record.

Recently they went 2-1 in a series against JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, CA), 3-0 against Servite (CA) and 2-1 against Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA). The Lancers will be playing in the National HS Invitational in North Carolina, followed by the Boras Classic in April.

No. 7 Owasso (OK) took its spring trip to Florida and went 6-1, winning the Dan Giannini Memorial Classic. They are 13-1 overall.

Brennan Phillips continues to lead the pitching staff with a 4-0 record, 0.00 ERA, 38 strikeouts in 24 innings. Jackson Farrell is 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA, 32 Strikeouts in 21 innings.

No. 8 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, CA) continues to move up in the California rankings and is currently No. 4 in the Los AngelesTimes poll after starting the season 17-0. The Trailblazers have not allowed a single opponent to score more than 3 runs in a game. They have outscored opponents 137-17 and recorded 7 shutouts.

New to the poll at No. 9 is Allatoona (Acworth, GA) which is 18-0. The Buccaneers recently shut out North Cobb (Kennesaw, GA), 12-0 and South Cobb (Austell, GA), 15-0.

In a 12-2 win over Wheeler (Marietta, GA), William Mosley belted two homers and collected 5 RBI.

No. 10 Reno (NV) is 14-1 and recently won the Boras Classic-Arizona tournament after defeating Hamilton (Chandler, AZ), 5-3. From Arizona, the Huskies travelled to California to play in the Anaheim Lions Tournament where they went 4-1, dropping a game against La Mirada (CA), 8-2.

No. 11 Hamilton (Chandler, AZ) is 11-1 with their only loss to No. 10 Reno (NV) in the Boras Classic-Arizona.

No. 12 Yucaipa (CA) has been rising the California polls and is currently No. 2 in the LA Times poll. They are 11-2 (7-1 in league play).

In a 15-6 win over Redlands East Valley (CA), Yucaipa’s SS Jacob Reimer hit three home runs and had 6 RBI.

Next month Yucaipa will be participating in the National HS Invitational in North Carolina as well as the Boras Classic (Southern California).

No. 13 Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, FL) is 10-2. Pitching continues be a strong suit for the Eagles. In a 1-0 win over Monsignor Pace (FL), Jake Clemente went 5 innings, allowing two hits and striking out 8. In a 9-1 victory over Vestavia Hills (AL), Chris Arroyo went 5 innings with 11 strikeouts.

No. 14 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) is 15-1 with its only loss to No. 10 Reno (NV). Leading the pitching staff are Lucas Boesen (4-1, 2.14 ERA, 8 BB, 21 K, 19 2/3 IP) and Tyler Avery (2-0, 1.25 ERA, 8 BB, 24 K, 22 1/3 IP). Gaels’ batters have hit 21 homers in 16 games.

No. 15 Rockwall-Heath (Heath, TX) is 14-3 and ranked No. 2 in the Texas 6A poll (4-0 in district play).

No. 16 Hanover (Mechanicsville, VA) won its season opener against Henrico (Richmond, VA), 25-0 and are 1-0.

New to the poll at No. 18 is Sumrall (MS) which opened its season with a 16-0 record. They are 4-0 in league play, defeating Poplarville (MS), 9-3 and 6-4 and Columbia (MS), 14-4 and 6-2.

No. 19 Berkeley Prep (Tampa, FL) is 13-0 on the season. The Buccaneers recently defeated Jesuit (Tampa, FL), 4-3, Bartram Trail (St. Johns, FL), 6-5 in 8 innings and Clearwater Central Catholic (FL), 8-5.

No. 20 Calvary Christian (Clearwater, FL) has rolled off 12 straight wins to open the season. Pitchers have thrown 8 shutouts so far, and they have outscored opponents 113-8.

No. 21 Christian Brothers College (St. Louis, MO) opened its season with 5 straight wins. In those games, they scored 61 runs and allowed opponents only 5.

The pitching staff has a 0.78 team ERA and the offense has a .431 team batting average with 24 stolen bases. Off to a hot start are LHP Tyler Charlton (1 R, 0 BB, 20 K, 11 IP) and LHP Camron Poe (0 R, 0 H, 7 K, 3.1 IP).

No. 23 Providence (Charlotte, NC) is 9-0, recently beating South Mecklenburg (NC) twice. In a 3-0 victory, Eli Jerzembeck had 16 strikeouts. In the 3-1 win, Mike Forret struck out 9 SMHS batters.

No. 24 Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, CA) is 13-3 and is 9-2 in Mission League play. Recently the Wolverines won all three league games against Loyola (Los Angeles, CA) and went 2-1 in a series against Crespi (Encino, CA).

No. 25 Servite (CA) is 8-3 after losing three league games against Orange Lutheran (CA). But they won all three against Santa Margarita, 7-2, 6-1 and 3-2.

No. 26 Hewitt-Trussville (AL) is 17-1. Huskies’ pitchers have recorded 9 shutouts so far. Six have come in the last 8 games.

No. 27 Rio Rancho (NM) is 16-1. Early in the season, the Rams went 4-1 against teams in El Paso, TX, losing only to Americas, 6-3. They currently have a 14-game winning streak.

Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) dropped to No. 28 after losing a three-game series to Servite as the team is now 12-3.

No. 29 Rogers (AR) is 9-2. They recently were 3-1 against Arizona and Colorado schools. Most recently they beat Desert Mountain (AZ), 10-3 and Perry (AZ), 4-0.

No. 30 Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, NJ) begins April 1.

Teams that fell out of the top 30 include Farragut (Knoxville, TN) 5-4, Auburn (AL) 18-3, Har-Ber (Springdale, AR) 9-3, Southlake Carroll (Southlake, TX) 15-5, Baylor School (Chattanooga, TN) 3-5, and American Fork (UT), 6-2.
