ST MARY’S, BARBE NO. 1 IN CB’S NATIONAL HS POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — St. Mary’s Prep (Orchard Lake, MI) and Barbe (Lake Charles, LA) are tied for No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball’s latest National High School Poll presented by Diamond Pro.

St. Mary’s Prep won’t play its season opener until March 30.

They were ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball’s preseason poll and returns a powerful ball club that went 43-1 last season and were Michigan Division 2 state champions.

It was their second consecutive Michigan state title as St. Mary’s ended the season with 22 straight victories.

The Eaglets finished with a .385 team batting average and averaged 11 runs a game (480 in 44 games). St. Mary’s hit 59 homers, 78 doubles and 19 triples. The pitching staff had a 1.25 ERA and struck out 442 batters.

Seventeen players return with 12 NCAA Division I commits and 7 who were starters last season.

Barbe High School has rolled to a 15-0 record and outscored opponents, 150-16.

In the last 5 games, Barbe pitchers have allowed only 4 runs while the offense has scored 72 runs and swiped 49 bases. The pitching staff has posted 7 shutouts in 15 games.

Four batters hit over .500 during the past five games, including C/DH Donny Sandifer (.647, 5 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 14 RBI), UT Donovan LaSalle (.643, 4 2B, 2 3B, 15 RBI, 7 RS), CF Crawford Courville (.636, 3 2B, 1 3B, 6 RBI, 6 RS) and SS/RHP Gavin Guidry (.500, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 7 SB, 6 BB).

No. 3 Owasso (OK) is 7-0 and headed to Orlando, Fla. for its spring break trip.

The Rams kicked off the season with back-to-back perfect games over U.S. Grant (OK), 27-0 and 19-0. LHP Brennan Phillips struck out all 15 batters he faced in 5 innings while LHP Jackson Farrell struck out 14 of the 15 batters he faced in 5 innings.

So far this season, the two pitchers have thrown a combined 24 innings with two wins each and have struck out a combined 48 batters with no walks or hit batters. Owasso has outscored opponents, 102-8.

No. 4 Orange Lutheran (Orange, CA) has a 7-1 record and remains No. 1 in the Los Angeles Times baseball rankings as well as the state’s Cal-Hi baseball poll.

The Lancers had a week off and return to start Trinity League play against JSerra Catholic. They won the first two games, 9-0 and 1-0 and lost the third game, 2-1.

Louis Rodriguez pitched six shutout innings in the 9-0 victory. He struck out seven and allowed four hits.

In the bottom of the 7th of the second game, the teams were tied 0-0 when OLU’s Chase Cummings hit a walk-off single to score Ben Reiland for the 1-0 win.

No. 5 Buford (GA) posted an 11-0 record after winning the LaGrange (GA) Invitational. The Wolves beat previously ranked Jesuit (Tampa, FL), 7-4 in that tournament.

The pitching staff has a 1.6 ERA while the offensive has recorded 12 home runs.

No. 6 The First Academy (Orlando, FL) is undefeated with 6 wins. This extends their win streak to 28 games since last season. TFA has outscored opponents 49-1 this year. Head Coach Scott Grove is one game away from his 500th career victory.

No. 7 Hamilton (Chandler, AZ) opened the season with 6 straight victories that includes a 5-4 win in 8 innings over Red Mountain (AZ), 11-1 win over Sandra Day O’Connor (AZ) and 9-1 win over Chaparral (AZ).

After dropping its first game of the season, No. 8 Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, FL) has won 6 straight games to post a 6-1 record. In the past week, Coach Todd Fitz-Gerald picked up his 450th career victory. In a 15-3 win over Flanagan (FL), Santiago Ordonez went 4-for-4 at the plate.

New to the poll at No. 9 is Tompkins (Katy, TX) which has started the season with a 13-0 record. The Falcons have outscored opponents, 126-29 with wins over San Antonio Reagan (TX), 9-3 and Flower Mound (TX), 8-2.

No. 10 Servite (Anaheim, CA) is 5-0 with recent wins over El Modena (CA), 5-0 and Lakewood (CA), 18-5. They are slated to play three league games against Orange Lutheran.

No. 11 Farragut (Knoxville, TN) starts March 14.

No. 12 Auburn (AL) has posted a 9-1 record. The offense has been led by Connor Cosby (.429) and Cade Belyeu (3 HR). Patrick Davidson has three wins and an 0.00 ERA along with Ryan Olson (3-0, 1.68 ERA).

New to the poll at No. 13 is Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, CA) with an 11-0 record. Pitching has been the team’s strength with 5 shutouts.

Against Windward, RHP Jaden Noot threw a six-inning no-hitter with 14 strikeouts. RHP Eddie Mgdesyan tossed a one-hitter against Viewpoint and struck out seven. RHP Kassius Thomas struck out 8 in a 3-1 win over Windward.

No. 14 Reno (NV) is 6-0 including three shutouts. They have outscored opponents 77-5.

No. 15 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) is 9-0 and will participate in the Boras Classic-Arizona tournament. Hitting has been strong led by Justin Crawford (.516, 2 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 14 RBI), Gunnar Myro (.538, 3 2B) and Demitri Diamant (.519, 4 2B, 7 RBI). Leading the pitching staff is RHP Lucas Boesen (3-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 BB, 20 K, 13 IP).

No. 16 Yucaipa (CA) has a 7-2 record with two recent wins over Beaumont, 16-0 and Redlands, 5-1.

No. 17 Central Martinsburg (PA) starts March 31.

No. 18 Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) rolled to a 9-0 record. They recently defeated two out-of-state teams in Poudre (CO), 10-0 and Red Mountain (AZ), 5-1. C Luke Lavin hit for the cycle against Poudre while Sammy Cova and Kyle Evans combined for a 6-inning no-hitter in the contest.

No. 19 Hanover (Mechanicsville, VA) begins on March 21.

New to the poll at No. 20 is Har-Ber (Springdale, AR) with 6 straight wins and a No. 1 ranking in the state.

No. 21 Southlake Carroll (Southlake, TX) is 12-3 with two of its losses to California teams Orange Lutheran and JSerra Catholic. The Dragons currently have a 9-game winning streak against Texas teams, including nationally ranked Rockwall-Heath, 3-2.

No. 22 Walsh Jesuit (Cuyahoga Falls, OH) starts March 26.

No. 23 Christian Brothers College (St. Louis, MO) begins March 19.

No. 24 Providence (Charlotte, NC) is 4-0. Eli Jerzembeck has been outstanding on the mound with two of the wins. Against Weddington, he posted 17 strikeouts and also recorded 14 against Charlotte Catholic. Tommy Walker had a walk-off grand slam in a 13-10 win over Reagan (NC).

No. 25 Rockwall-Heath (TX) is 10-3 and is No. 3 in the Texas 6A Baseball Poll. Losses have been to Southlake Carroll, 3-2, San Marcos, 8-0 and Prosper Rockhill, 6-3.

No. 26 Baylor School (Chattanooga, TN) begins March 14.

No. 27 Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, CA) is 8-2-1. In 8 innings, they tied 3-3 with Sherman Oaks Notre Dame (CA) and went 1-1-1 in the league series. They won three games against St. Francis (La Canada, CA), 13-0, 8-1 and 19-0.

No. 28 Rogers (AR) is 5-1 to start the season. Braxton Haywood threw a complete game one-hitter against Bishop Kelley to win 6-0.

No. 29 American Fork (UT) begins March 25.

No. 30 Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, NJ) starts March 24.

Teams that fell out of the poll include Jesuit (Tampa, FL), 7-3; Basic (Henderson, NV), 8-2; American Heritage (Plantation, FL), 5-2; and AC Flora (Columbia, SC), 3-2.
