ST MARY’S NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. — St. Mary’s Prep (Orchard Lake, MI) is No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball’s first regular-season National High School Poll presented by Diamond Pro.
The Eaglets’ season opener isn’t until March 30. They were ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball preseason poll.
St. Mary’s Prep returns a powerful team that went 43-1 last season, were Michigan Division 2 state champions and finished No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball’s final 2021 poll.
It was their second consecutive Michigan state title as St. Mary’s ended the season with 22 straight victories.
The Eaglets finished with a .385 team batting average and averaged 11 runs a game (480 in 44 games).
St. Mary’s hit 59 homers, 78 doubles and 19 triples. The pitching staff had a 1.25 ERA and struck out 442 batters.
Seventeen players return with 12 NCAA Division I commits and 7 who were starters last season.
The team features a trio of Collegiate Baseball pre-season All-Americans.
No. 2 Barbe (Lake Charles, LA) kicked off its season with 5 straight wins and have outscored opponents 47-6.
Four players are leading the offense in LF Black Moss (.615, 1 3B, 8 RBI, 4 SB), SS/2B Owen Galt (.500, 4 RBI, 2 SB), SS/RHP Gavin Guidry (.471, 1 2B, 4 RBI, 6 SB) and RF/RHP Grant Trahan (.429, 2 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 4 SB).
Guidry pitched 5 innings against St. Louis Catholic (Lake Charles, LA). He allowed two hits, no runs and struck out 10 to help Barbe win, 1-0.
No. 3 Orange Lutheran (Orange, CA) is 5-0 to start the season. The Lancers went 4-0 in the PBR Preseason Invitational, beating Gahr (CA) 2-1, Ayala (CA) 4-3, Huntington Beach (CA) 5-0 and Yucaipa (CA) 12-1.
They also played No. 25 Southlake Carroll (TX) and won, 2-0.
In the game against Huntington Beach, pitchers Oliver Santos and Louis Rodriguez combined for a 4-hit shutout and struck out 16 batters.
No. 4 Jesuit (Tampa, FL) started its season 3-0 with wins over Bloomindale (Valrico, FL) 4-1, Plant (Tampa, FL) 4-3 and Strawberry Crest (FL), 4-0. Their next opponent on the schedule is No. 8 Buford (GA) in a tournament against southern high school teams.
No. 5 Owasso (OK) starts March 1.
No. 6 Rockwall-Heath (Heath, TX) begins March 4.
No. 7 The First Academy (Orlando, FL) improved its winning streak to 25 dating back to the 2021 season and are 3-0 this year. They recorded wins over Windermere Prep (FL) 15-0 and 12-0 and Winter Springs (FL) 2-1.
Greg Pettay started the season going 7-for-7 at the plate.
No. 8 Buford (GA) opened its season with three straight shutouts over St. Pius X Catholic (Atlanta, GA) 8-0 and Shiloh (Snellville, GA) 9-0 and 10-0. The pitching staff struck out 44 batters in 20 innings.
No. 9 Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, FL) lost its season opener to Taravella (Coral Springs, FL), 4-3, but came back to shutout Cardinal Gibbons (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) 3-0 and St. John Paul (Boca Raton, FL) 12-0. Chris Arroyo, Brandon White and Eduardo Fuentes combined to throw a no-hitter against St. John Paul.
No. 10 Hamilton (Chandler, AZ) starts March 1.
No. 11 Farragut (Knoxville, TN) begins March 14.
No. 12 Yucaipa (CA) kicked off its season going 4-1 with a loss in the title game of the PBR Invitational to Orange Lutheran, 12-1. SS Jacob Reimer leads the offense, hitting .411 with 2 home runs and 7 RBI.
No. 13 Auburn (AL) opened its season with a 5-1 record, losing only to Enterprise (AL) 6-2. In the 8-7 victory over Bob Jones (AL), Coach Matt Cimo received his 600th career win.
No. 14 Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, CA) started 4-1 with one loss to Yucaipa (CA) 6-5. Leading the offense are Bryce Rainer (.500 BA) and Toussaint Bythewood (.390, 7 SB).
No. 15 Servite (Anaheim, CA) kicked off its season with a 5-0 record. They have defeated San Juan Hills (CA) 6-1, Los Alamitos (CA) 6-3 (8 inn.), Fullerton (CA) 16-7, El Modena (CA) 5-0 and Lakewood (CA) 18-5. Their next opponent is against No. 3 Orange Lutheran.
No. 16 Reno (NV) begins March 3.
No. 17 Central Martinsburg (Martinsburg, PA) begins March 31.
No. 18 Rogers (AR) opened its season with a win over Van Buren, the defending 5A state champs. In the 4-1 victory, Kade Seldomridge hit a two-run triple.
No. 19 Hanover (Mechanicsville, VA) begins March 21.
No. 20 Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) won its first three games of the season, beating Gahr (CA) 5-4, Chaparral (Scottsdale, AZ) 3-2 and Corona del Sol (Tempe, AZ) 3-2.
No. 21. Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) starts March 4.
No. 22 Walsh Jesuit (Cuyahoga Falls, OH) begins March 26.
No. 23 Christian Brothers College (St. Louis, MO) starts March 19.
No. 24 Providence (Charlotte, NC) starts March 1.
No. 25 Southlake Carroll (Southlake, TX) began its season on the road playing Arizona and Southern California schools and went 3-2. The Dragons had wins over Chaparral (Scottsdale, AZ) 8-3, JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, CA) 7-0 and El Dorado (Placentia, CA) 2-0.
They lost to Orange Lutheran (CA) 2-0 and Cypress (CA) 5-1. They return to Texas to play local teams.
No. 26 Baylor School (Chattanooga, TN) begins March 14.
No. 27 Basic (Henderson, NV) starts March 3.
American Heritage (Plantation FL) enters the poll at No. 28, having started the season 2-0. The Patriots defeated John Carroll Catholic (Ft. Pierce, FL) 11-1 and Braddock (Miami, FL) 8-1.
No. 29 AC Flora (Columbia, SC) starts March 3.
No. 30 Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, NJ) features two of the top righthanded pitchers in New Jersey in Caden Dana and Kevin Jaxel. Their season begins on March 24.
The Ironmen will participate in the National High School Invitational in April.
Teams that fell out of the poll include Parkview (Lilburn, GA) 2-3, Huntington Beach (CA) 2-3, Friendswood (TX) 2-3-1, and Liberty (Peoria, AZ) 2-2.
