Collegiate Baseball Div. I Poll 5-25-15

LSU NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL 

TUCSON, Ariz. — Louisiana St. (48-10) is ranked No. 1 for the sixth straight time in the Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division I poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum.

The Tigers won the Southeastern Conference regular season title with a 21-8 record.

Poll Notes: Several teams have been red-hot. Missouri State, which captured the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title and tournament, has won 16 consecutive games. St. John’s won the Big East Conference regular season and tournament championships and have posted 15 straight wins. Radford, the regular season and tournament winner of the Big South Conference, has won 15 in a row.

Cal. St. Fullerton, winners of six straight, captured the Big West Conference title. The Titans didn’t lose a single series during Big West play and recorded three sweeps. Texas has also been hot as the Longhorns captured the Big 12 Tournament title with a 4-0 record and superb pitching. Illinois, which had the longest winning streak in the nation this season at 27 games, saw it end with a 2-1 loss to Maryland in the Big Ten Tournament. It was the first loss in 53 days for the Illini.

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1959 college baseball season.

 NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

  • RHP Connor Sitz, Ohio: Sitz fired the first no-hitter in Mid-American Conference Tournament history and the first at Ohio since 1996 during a 6-0 win over Bowling Green. He struck out four batters.
  • C Seby Zavala, San Diego St.: Zavala belted 5 home runs and collected 11 RBI as he hit .435 (10-for-23) over 6 games as he led the Aztecs to the Mountain West Tournament title. At one point, he homered in 4 straight games as he led San Diego St. back from a first-game loss to five straight wins in the championship. He also drew 4 walks and had a slugging percentage of 1.174.
  • LHP Matt Hall, Missouri St.: Hall was named to the Missouri Valley All-Tournament team after striking out 16 batters in 9 2/3 innings during the championship. He didn’t allow a run.
  • 3B Josh Anderson, Florida International: Anderson was named Most Valuable Player of the Conference USA Tournament after going 7-for-15 at the plate (.467) over 4 games with 3 home runs and 9 RBI. He also scored 6 runs and walked 3 times.
  • RHP Andrew Moore, Oregon St.: Moore allowed only 2 hits in a complete game shutout of California as he struck out a season-high 13 batters. He went to just one 3-ball count in the win.
  • RHP Ryan McCormick, St. John’s: McCormick retired the final 19 batters of the game to complete a 2-hitter during a win against Creighton. He racked up a career-high 10 strikeouts.
