Collegiate Baseball Div. I Poll 5-23-16

MISS. ST. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL 

TUCSON, Ariz. — Mississippi State (40-14-1) is ranked No.1 for the first time this season in the Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division I baseball poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum.

The Bulldogs completed a 3-game sweep of Arkansas over the past weekend to capture its 11th Southeastern conference regular season title and first since 1989. Mississippi State is the hottest team in the country, winning 11 consecutive games and nine conference games in a row for the first time since 1989 as well. The Bulldogs become the first team in SEC history to go from last place to outright champions the very next season.

Florida, ranked No. 1 last week in leading the SEC, slipped to sixth after losing two of three at Louisiana State. The Gators are the number four seed in the SEC tournament.

Poll Notes: Several other teams are red-hot. Besides Mississippi State’s 11 straight wins, Louisville has won nine in row, Virginia and Bryant 11 of their last 12, Long Beach State nine straight, Louisiana-Lafayette and Coastal Carolina six in a row while South Carolina, Texas Christian and Clemson have each won five straight.

In key series over the past weekend, Miami beat Florida State two of three on the road, Texas A&M beat Mississippi two of three at home, South Carolina won three straight at Alabama, N.C. State won two of three at home against North Carolina, Arizona State won two of three at UCLA and Arizona lost two of three at Oregon.

Four teams fell out of the top 30 this week in Southern Mississippi (0-3 last week), Rice (0-4), Minnesota (1-3) and Indiana (1-4). New to the poll is Long Beach State (35-18), Florida Atlantic (37-15), Bryant (44-10) and Nebraska (37-18).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1959 college baseball season.

NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

  • RHP Dalton Roach, Minnesota State: Roach threw a whopping 171 pitches during an 11-inning complete game, 1-0 win over St. Cloud State. He struck out 12 and only allowed 4 hits.
  • OF Vinny Mallaro, Buffalo: Mallaro hit five home runs with 11 RBI over five games as he collected 9 hits.
  • RHP Sam Perez, Missouri State: Perez piled up 17 strikeouts over three outings last week as he scattered 7 hits over 10 combined scoreless innings of relief.
  • 2B Chris Hess, Rhode Island: Hess recorded 8 hits last week with 6 being triples over five games. He also mixed in a double and a single. Currently he leads the nation with 10 triples on the season.
  • LHP Joey Lucchesi, Southeast Missouri: Lucchesi struck out 13 batters over six innings against Belmont. He now has 136 strikeouts on the season which is a school record and also leads the nation.
  • OF Dillon Cooper, Alabama State: Cooper hit three home runs with five doubles and 14 RBI as he went 10-for-14 over four games. He also scored 9 runs and stole 2 bases.
