LSU NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Louisiana St. (43-8) is ranked No. 1 for the fourth straight time in the Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division I poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum.

The Tigers have won 20 of their last 23 and took three straight at home from Missouri over the past weekend. LSU is hitting .320 with 42 homers, 114 doubles and 21 triples in 51 games. On the base paths, the Tigers have swiped 96 of 123 bases while limiting opponents to only 38 in 59 attempts. The pitching staff has a 2.89 ERA with 434 strikeouts and 177 walks.

In key series over the past weekend, Texas A&M lost two of three at home to South Carolina, Louisville won two of three at home against Florida St., UCLA won two of three at Arizona St., Vanderbilt lost two of three at home to Florida, U.C. Santa Barbara lost two of three at Cal. St. Fullerton, Rice swept a 3-game series at Florida Atlantic, U.C. Irvine won two of three at home against Cal. Poly and Notre Dame swept a 3-game series at home against North Carolina.

Poll Notes: Several teams have been red-hot. Illinois has won 24 straight, Dallas Baptist 10 in a row, Miami, Fla., St. John’s and Radford 8 consecutive and Rice 7 straight. Two teams fell out of the top 30 in North Carolina (2-3 last week) and Florida Atlantic (1-3). New to the poll is Notre Dame (33-18 overall) and Radford (36-14).

NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

• LF Jeff Boehm, Illinois-Chicago: Boehm had a remarkable week as he belted 6 home runs with 12 RBI over 5 games and went 11-for-16 at the plate. He also hit 2 doubles, 1 triple, walked 4 times and scored 11 runs as he accounted for 33 total bases.
• RHP T.J. Hunt, Monmouth: Hunt fired a 7-inning no-hitter during a 1-0 win over Saint Peter’s. It was the first no-hitter by a Monmouth pitcher since the 2007 season. Hunt struck out 5 batters and walked 2 as he faced only 23 batters in the 90-pitch outing.
• C Esteban Tresgallo, Alabama-Birmingham: Tresgallo homered in 4 straight games as he knocked in 11 RBI over 5 games. He also tripled once, scored 7 runs, walked twice, tallied 7 hits and had a whopping 1.312 slugging percentage.
• RHP Sam Perez, Missouri St.: Perez was brilliant during two relief appearances as he picked up his sixth and seventh wins of the season. He worked a combined 12 innings and struck out 16 without issuing a walk. Perez surrendered only one run.
• 1B Sikes Orvis, Mississippi: Orvis hit 3 home runs, 2 doubles, 6 RBI and scored 6 runs in 3 games against Mississippi State. He went 7-for-12 at the plate
• LHP A.J. Puk, Florida: Puk had a career-high 12 strikeouts over 7 innings against Vanderbilt during a win against the Commodores. He scattered 5 hits and yielded 2 runs. Over his last two starts at Georgia and at Vanderbilt, Puk has fanned 23 batters, allowed 3 walks and surrendered 2 runs over 13 innings.
• RF Connor Walsh, The Citadel: Walsh went 5-for-10 at the plate with 3 home runs, 7 runs scored and 9 RBI during a 3-game sweep of East Tennessee St.
