TENNESSEE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. — Tennessee (33-3) is ranked No. 1 for the fourth straight Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division I baseball poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum.
The Volunteers lead the Southeastern Conference with a 14-1 record. Over the past week, Tennessee was 2-2 with a loss to Tennessee Tech. and winners of two of three against Alabama at home.
Tennessee has the most prolific offense in the country with 87 homers, 93 doubles and 17 triples as the team is averaging 9.7 runs a game. The Volunteers have a .635 slugging percentage and .435 on-base percentage.
As far as pitching, Tennessee leads the nation with a 2.07 ERA and strikeout-to walk-ratio (421 strikeouts and 74 walks).
Poll Notes: In key series over the weekend, Florida St. swept a 3-game series at home against Louisville, Virginia lost two of three at Pittsburgh, Arkansas swept a 3-game series at home against LSU, Notre Dame lost three at Duke, TCU swept a 3-game series at home against Texas Tech., Stanford won two of three at UCLA, Texas lost two of three at Kansas St., Vanderbilt won two of three at home against Florida, Arizona lost two of three at Utah, Texas A&M won two of three at Georgia, Oregon St. swept a 3-game series at home against Long Beach St., Vanderbilt took two of three at home against Florida, Oklahoma St. took two of three at West Virginia and Cal. Poly won two of three at U.C. Irvine.
Several teams have been hot. Rutgers has won 15 in a row, Central Michigan (13), Connecticut (9), Southern Mississippi (9) and Oregon St. (7).
Four teams fell out of the top 30 in Texas Tech. (lost 4 in a row), LSU (lost 3 straight), Florida (1-3) and Wake Forest (2-2).

1B Matt Coutney, Old Dominion: Coutney belted 5 home runs with 11 RBI over 4 games as he went 8-for-17 at the plate. He hit at least one home run in all four games.
LHP Parker Messick, Florida St.: Messick fanned 14 Louisville batters and only allowed 5 hits with no walks over 6 2/3 innings.
C Tyler Lozano, Southern California: Lozano belted 4 home runs with 10 RBI and scored 5 runs over 4 games as he went 6-for-18 at the plate. He tied a USC record with 3 home runs during a 14-12 loss to Arizona State. He is the first Trojan hitter since Ricky Oropesa in 2010 to hit 3 home runs in one contest.
RHP Matt Brooks, Charlotte: Brooks carried a no-hitter into the final out of an 8-0 win over Winthrop. However, it was broken up on a long drive to centerfield that barely eluded centerfielder Jake Cunningham as the ball tipped off his glove. Brooks settled on a 1-hitter with 3 strikeouts.
DH Luke Folsom, Colorado School of Mines: Folsom hit 4 home runs and a double during a 20-10 win over New Mexico Highlands. He collected 7 RBI. He broke the school record for home runs, RBI and total bases in one game. The NCAA Div. 2 record for home runs in a game is five set by Josh Hamilton of St. Edward’s in 2003. Folsom’s 4 home runs marked the 29th time it has happened in Division 2 history.
LHP Trey Dombroski, Monmouth: Dombroski struck out a career-high 13 batters in 8 innings of work against Quinnipiac. He recorded 9 strikeouts over the first 4 innings.
DH Tim Borden II, Georgia Tech.: Borden belted 4 home runs with 11 RBI as he collected 6 hits over 4 games. One of his home runs was a grand slam as he posted a whopping slugging percentage of 1.118.
RHP Carter Gannaway, Tennessee Tech.: Gannaway delivered his top performance of the season as he tossed 5 2/3 innings out of the bullpen to secure a midweek win over No. 1 Tennessee, the program’s first win over a top ranked team. He held the nation’s top offense without a hit while he struck out a career-high 9 batters.
RHP Nolan McCarthy, Georgetown: McCarthy struck out 11 Butler batters over 6 innings as he picked up his fourth win of the season. He logged two or more punchouts in four of his six frames.
