TENNESSEE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. — Tennessee (23-1) is ranked No. 1 for the first time this season in Collegiate Baseball’s NCAA Division I baseball poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum.
The Volunteers have won 15 straight and lead the SEC East with a 6-0 record. Tennessee swept a 3-game series over the past weekend at Mississippi.
The Volunteers have a prolific offense as they lead the nation in home runs (64), doubles (71), slugging percentage (.683) and on-base percentage (.455) as Tennessee is averaging 11.1 runs per game (second in the nation).
If that wasn’t enough, the Volunteers lead the nation in team ERA at 1.89 and have fanned 284 batters while walking only 58.
Vanderbilt, ranked No. 1 last week, slipped to third after losing two of three at South Carolina.
Poll Notes: In key series over the weekend, Virginia won two of three at Wake Forest, Texas Tech. took two of three at home against Texas, Miami (Fla.) swept a 3-game set at home against North Carolina, Georgia lost two of three at Kentucky, UCLA took two of three at Arizona, Georgia Tech. was swept in a 3-game series at N.C. State and LSU took two of three at Florida.
Several teams have been hot. Besides Tennessee’s 15-game winning streak, Oklahoma St. has won 11 in a row while San Diego has won 6 straight. Louisville swept a 3-game series at Boston College and sits at 6-0 in the ACC, matching the 2017 team for the program’s best start in league play since joining the ACC in 2015.
Six teams fell out of the top 30 in Georgia Tech. (1-4 last week), Liberty (1-3), Connecticut (3-2), Maryland (2-2), South Alabama (1-3) and Texas A&M (2-2).

1B Christopher Sargent, Southern Mississippi: Sargent belted 5 home runs over 4 games last week with 15 RBI. He homered in all 4 games and hit two in one contest against Western Kentucky. He finished 12-for-17 at the plate.
RHP Drew Thorpe, Cal Poly: Thorpe fanned 15 U.C. San Diego batters during a 7-0 win as he scattered 3 hits over 7 innings.
CF Josh Hatcher, Kennesaw St.: Hatcher had a remarkable week as he hit for the cycle twice over 5 games and went 12-for-24 at the plate with 2 homers, 3 triples, 3 doubles and 11 RBI with 7 runs scored.
C Jake Gehri, Yale: Gehri set an Ivy League record for home runs in a game with 4 against Princeton that included 2 grand slams. He collected 11 RBI in the game, two shy of the Ivy League record, in the 13-6 win.
OF Jake Hyde, Georgetown: In 4 games, Hyde hit 4 home runs, 2 doubles and collected 15 RBI. Against Delaware, he recorded 7 RBI as he belted a grand slam and 3-run homer.
RHP Hunter Loyd, East Tennessee St.: Loyd struck out 15 George Washington batters over 7 innings and only surrendered 1 walk.
1B Ivan Melendez, Texas: Melendez belted 4 home runs with 5 RBI and 7 runs scored over 4 games. He reached base in 13 consecutive plate appearances at one point as he collected 8 hits, which included 3 homers, a double and 5 walks).
LHP Parker Messick, Florida St.: Messick struck out 14 Duke batters in 7 innings during a 4-0 win over the Blue Devils which was a career high. He only allowed 2 walks and 4 hits.
C/DH Logan Williams, North Dakota St.: Williams belted 4 home runs during a 3-game series against Northern Colorado with 11 RBI and 5 runs scored. He was 6-for-14 at the plate.
RHP Bo Bonds, Louisiana-Lafayette: Bonds struck out a career-high 14 batters in 5 2/3 innings of work out of the bullpen to help Louisiana rally for a 5-4 win over South Alabama.
OF Ethan O’Donnell, Northwestern: O’Donnell drove home 13 RBI with 4 home runs. He belted a grand slam on his birthday which was part of a 6-RBI game against Southern Illinois. He added 4 doubles to go along with a 1.333 slugging percentage.
LHP Trevor Nicholson, Eastern Illinois: Nicholson struck out 14 Tennessee-Martin batters over 7 innings with 3 walks. It was the third time this season Nicholson has fanned more than 10 in a game.
2B/RF Jay Beshears, Northwestern: Beshears hit 4 home runs with 4 doubles and collected 11 hits as he hit .579 in 4 games. He also racked up a 1.316 slugging percentage.
