Collegiate Baseball Div 1 Poll (5-20-19)

UCLA NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — UCLA (45-8) is ranked No. 1 for the seventh straight week in the latest Collegiate Baseball NCAA Div. I baseball poll presented by Big League Chew.  

The Bruins, winners of 8 in a row and 16 of their last 17, beat U.C. Irvine and then swept a 3-game series at home against Washington over the past week.

UCLA is No. 1 in the nation in team ERA (2.56), hits allowed per nine innings (6.2) and shutouts by its pitching staff (11). The Bruins also are No. 4 in strikeout-to-walk ratio (553 strikeouts, 176 walks) and No. 4 in fielding percentage (.982). Defensively, UCLA has only allowed 18 stolen bases in 35 attempts over 53 games.

Poll Notes: Several teams are red-hot. Central Michigan has won 15 in a row, U.C. Santa Barbara 13 straight and Vanderbilt 18 wins in its last 19 games.

In key series across the USA during the past week, Stanford split two games at home with Oregon St., Arkansas lost two of three at Texas A&M, Louisville won two of three at home against Florida St., Miami (Fla.) won two of three at home against Duke, N.C. State won two of three at North Carolina, Baylor lost two at Oklahoma St., Texas Tech. won two of three at Texas Christian, Tennessee won two of three at home against Mississippi and Arizona State split two games at California.

Two teams fell out of the top 30 in Mississippi (lost 6 of last 7) and Michigan (lost 5 of last 7). New to the poll is Tennessee (38-18) and California (30-18).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1959 college baseball season.

1B Grayson Byrd, Clemson: Byrd belted 4 home runs with 10 RBI and 6 runs scored over 4 games as he went 7-for-18 at the plate. He hit a home run in each of the 4 games last week and has hit 10 homers in the last 13 contests.

LHP Seth Lonsway, Ohio St.: Lonsway struck out 14 batters over 8 innings against Purdue during a 6-1 win. He only allowed 2 hits and no earned runs.

OF Stephen Scott, Vanderbilt: Scott belted 4 home runs with 9 runs scored and 8 RBI as he went 8 for 13 at the plate over 4 games.

RHP Ryan Garcia, UCLA: Garcia struck out 13 Washington batters over 8 innings during an 8-3 win over the Huskies. His first 10 outs of the game were via the strikeout. He was just one strikeout off his career high of 14 set against Utah April 26.

1B Andrew Daschbach, Stanford: Daschbach became the first Stanford hitter to belt 4 home runs in one game, leading the Cardinal to a 7-1 win over Cal Poly. He homered off 4 different pitchers. Eleven of his home runs this season have come during a 16-game span. Over 3 games last week, he was 7-for-13 with 4 home runs, 2 triples, 6 runs scored and 6 RBI.

RHP Karan Patel, Texas-San Antonio: Patal struck out a career-high 13 batters over 8 innings during a 4-3 win over Charlotte. He has fanned 102 hitters this season, becoming the first hurler in school history to reach the 100-strikeout plateau.

OF Matt Wallner, Southern Mississippi: Wallner hit 4 home runs with 7 RBI over 4 games as he went 8-for-14 at the plate. He also hit 2 doubles, scored 7 runs and walked 4 times.
