ST MARY’S NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL
TUCSON, AZ — St. Mary’s (Orchard Lake, MI) is the new No. 1 ranked team in Collegiate Baseball’s National High School Poll presented by Diamond Pro.
Friendswood (TX), the top team in the nation the last two polls, lost in the Regional Finals to Barbers Hill (TX), 8-2 and 5-2 to end its season with a 31-4 record.
St. Mary’s is 38-1 and riding a 17-game winning streak.
They trounced Birmingham Detroit Country Day, 10-1 to capture the Division 2 district title and advance to the state playoffs.
Junior hurler Brock Porter pitched 6 innings and allowed just one hit with 13 strikeouts to get the win. Porter, whose fastball has topped out at 100 mph, improved to 10-0 with 107 strikeouts in 50 1/3 innings.
The Eaglet hitters are averaging over 11 runs per game and have scored 428 runs in 39 games. They also have belted 57 homers in 39 games led by junior CF Jake Dresselhouse with 13 and C/1B Ike Irish with 11. SS Alex Mooney and OF Nolan Schubart each have 9 home runs.
Additionally, Mooney and Dresselhouse currently have 50 RBI while Schubart has 51. The pitching staff has 400 strikeouts and 98 walks in 39 games.
St. Mary’s baseball team has 12 players who are signed or committed to NCAA Div. I schools.
No.2 Barbe (Lake Charles, LA) — 39-2 F, Louisiana 5A champions.
No. 3 Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, FL) — 28-2 F Florida 7A state champs.
No. 4 Madison Central (Madison, MS) ended one of the best seasons in school history with a 34-2 record. The Jaguars defeated Northwest Rankin (MS), 3-2 and 11-1 for the Mississippi 6A title.
Ranard Grace tossed a complete game in the final game, winning 11-2. This year the Jaguars posted a .401 team batting average with 27 home runs and 122 stolen bases. The pitching staff had a 1.22 team ERA. This was the program’s fourth baseball title.
No. 5 Ayala (Chino Hills, CA) is 23-2 and headed into its second round of the CIF Division 1 playoffs after beating Beckman (Irvine, CA), 3-2. Cole Koniarsky set the school career hits record (138) after going 4-for-4 in the game with a home run and 2 RBI.
No. 6 Trinity (Louisville, KY) is battling for its Region title and is 35-2. They beat Portland Christian, 10-0 to advance in the tournament.
No. 7 Thousand Oaks (CA) won its first round in the CIF Southern DII Section championships against Moorpark (CA), 6-0. They will advance to play Mission Viejo (CA) next. They are 25-1.
No. 8 Buchanan (Clovis, CA) begins the first round of the CIF Central Section championships with a game against Righetti (CA). The Bears completed their regular season with a 25-2 record.
No. 9 Reno (NV) defeated Bishop Monogue (Reno, NV), 5-2 to capture the Northern Nevada championship, finishing the season 20-1.
No. 10 Baylor (Chattanooga, TN) beat Briarcrest Christian (TN), 8-1 for the Tennessee DII Class AA state title. This marks the third consecutive state title for Baylor which finished with a 27-4 record.
No. 11 Reagan (Pfafftown, NC) is 11-2 and defeated conference foe Davie (Mocksville, NC), 11-1. Josh Hartle tossed a 1-hitter and added a 2-run homer.
No. 12 Puyallup (WA) — 16-0 F, season completed.
No. 13 Orange Lutheran (Orange, CA) completed its regular season with a 27-4 record and advances to the first round of the CIF D1 Southern Section championship where they will play Mira Costa (CA).
No. 14 Friendswood (TX) lost in the Regional Finals to Barbers Hill (TX), 8-2 and 5-2 to end its season with a 31-4 record.
No. 15 Walsh Jesuit (Cuyahoga Falls, OH) advances to the quarterfinals of the state tournament after defeating Gilmour, 7-0, Chagrin Falls, 8-2, Mentor, 17-1 and Mayfield, 7-0.
Senior LHP Erik Stern has allowed only one unearned run all season. He threw a one-hit shutout in the 7-0 win over Mayfield. Walsh Jesuit is 28-3.
No. 16 Liberty (Peoria, AZ) 21-3 F, AZ 6A champions.
No. 17 Roff (OK) — 33-0 F, Oklahoma Class B champions.
No. 18 Jesuit (Tampa, FL) — 26-3 F, season completed.
No. 19 Buford (GA) — 32-2 F, season completed.
New to the poll at No. 20 is Smithson Valley (Spring Branch, TX) which has advanced to the Texas 6A semi-finals with a 35-3 record. They are scheduled to meet Rockwall-Heath.
Earlier the Rangers knocked Ronald Reagan (San Antonio, TX) out of the tournament, winning 4-3, losing 4-1 and winning 6-5 in 8 innings.
No. 21 Gregory-Portland (Portland, TX) lost two games to Rouse (TX), 5-2 and 3-1 in the Regional semi-finals to end its season 35-4-1.
No. 22 Magnolia Heights (Senatobia, MS) — 34-4 F, MAIS D2 champions.
No. 23 Auburn (AL) – 36-5 F, Alabama 7A state champions.
New to the poll at No. 24 is Houston County (Warner Robins, GA) which defeated Lassiter (Marietta, GA), 2-1 and 4-0 be become the Georgia 6A state champions. They posted a 33-7 record.
No. 25 Providence (Charlotte, NC) is leading its conference and has a 10-2 record.
No. 26 Mamaroneck (NY) closed out its regular season with a 17-1 record.
No. 27 Keller (TX) advanced to the Texas 6A semi-finals and will play Strake Jesuit (Houston, TX). They recently won a three-game series against Southlake Carroll, winning 2-1, losing 11-1 and winning 6-4. They are 32-7.
No. 28 Liberty (MO) won the Missouri 6A state title by defeating Fort Zumwalt West (O’Fallon, MO), 8-4. In the semi-finals, the Blue Jays beat Christian Brothers College, 8-2. They ended the season with a 32-9 record.
No. 29 Butler (Vandalia, OH) lost 4-0 to Elder (OH) in the Regional Finals of the state tournament, ending the season with a 28-3 record.
No. 30 Fort Zumwalt West (O’Fallon, MO) are the runners-up in the Missouri 6A championship and ended its season 35-5.
Falling out of the poll are Lassiter (Marietta, GA), Farragut (Knoxville, TN), Lake Travis (Austin, TX) and Ronald Reagan (San Antonio, TX).
