ST MARY’S NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. — After winning its state title, St. Mary’s H.S. (Orchard Lake, MI) remains No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball’s National High School Poll presented by Diamond Pro.
The Eaglets defeated Stevensville Lakeshore (MI), 9-0 to win its second consecutive Michigan state Division 2 title and finished with a 43-1 record. The Eaglets ended the season with 22 straight victories.
After being shut down in the first three innings, St. Mary’s exploded with six runs in the fourth. Adding to the timely hitting was impressive running on the base paths as the Eaglets swiped a state finals-record 12 bases, breaking a record of 9 stolen bases set in 1989.
Alex Mooney and Ryan Mooney both tied the individual state championship game record with 3 stolen bases each.
Tommy Allman dominated on the mound, allowing two hits with seven strikeouts.
Eight of the nine starting players are seniors and will be moving on to various NCAA Div. I universities while several younger players are already committed to college.
St. Mary’s finished with a .385 team batting average and averaged 11 runs a game (480 in 44 games).
The Eaglets hit 59 homers, 78 doubles and 19 triples as the offense walked 258 times and was hit by 64 pitches for an on-base percentage of .513. St. Mary’s stole 95 of 105 bases.
The pitching staff had a 1.25 ERA and struck out 442 batters with 99 walks.
No. 2 Barbe (Lake Charles, LA) 39-2 F, Louisiana 5A state champions.
No. 3 Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, FL) 28-2 F, Florida 7A state champions.
No. 4 Madison Central (Madison, MS) — 34-2 F, Mississippi 6A state champions.
No. 5 Thousand Oaks (CA) defeated Trabuco Hills (CA), 3-2 for the CIF Southern Section DII title. Despite being limited by Trabuco Hills’ pitcher to four hits and nine strikeouts, the Lancers managed to push across three runs across to earn its first section championship since 2003.
Thousand Oaks finished 29-1 and posted some of the best offensive numbers in California with a .344 team batting average, 41 doubles and 42 home runs in 30 games.
No. 6 Trinity (Louisville, KY) captured its first state baseball championship by defeating McCracken County (KY), 10-0 in 5 innings.
Colin Murphy went the distance, tossing a two-hitter. He was named tournament MVP. Korbyn Dickerson went 3-for-4 and drove in a game-high four runs.
The Shamrocks finished 41-2 which ties the Kentucky state record for most wins in a season.
No. 7 Buchanan (Clovis, CA) has a 29-2 record and advances to the first round of the CIF Southern DI championships. They will face Bishop Amat (La Puente, CA).
No. 8 Ayala (Chino Hills, CA) is 24-3 and begins Round 1 of the CIF Southern DI championships. They will face Eastlake (Chula Vista, CA) in the first game.
No. 9 Reno (Reno, NV) — 20-1 F, Northern Nevada champions.
No. 10 Baylor (Chattanooga, TN) 27-4 F, Tennessee DII Class AA state champions.
No. 11 Reagan (Pfafftown, NC) is 15-2 and begins it state playoffs. They face Providence (Charlotte, NC) which they previously beat early in the season.
No. 12 Puyallup (WA) — 16-0 F, season over.
No. 13 Liberty (Peoria, AZ) — 21-3 F, Arizona 6A state champions.
No. 14 Roff (OK) — 33-0 F, Oklahoma Class B champions.
No. 15. Orange Lutheran (Orange, CA) advanced to the CIF Southern DI championships and will face Grossmont (CA) in the first round. They are 29-5.
No. 16 Barbers Hill (Belvieu, TX) captured its first Texas 5A state title after edging out Hallsville (TX), 2-1. Reliever Raithen Malone was named the game’s MVP after going 3 1/3 innings, allowing just two hits, no walks and striking out three.
Barbers Hill won six consecutive games to close out the season and capture the championship. They finished 38-8-1.
No. 17 Houston County (Warner Robins, GA) — 33-7 F, Georgia 6A champions.
No. 18 Jesuit (Tampa, FL) — 26-3 F, season over.
No. 19 Buford (GA) — 32-2 F, season over.
No. 20 East Catholic (Manchester, CT) won its first CIAC Class M championship since 1997 after defeating Northwestern Regional, 7-0. They finished undefeated at 25-0.
LHP Frank Mozzicato went the distance, allowed no runs, no walks, one hit and struck out 17 in the contest.
No. 21 Magnolia Heights (Senatobia, MS) — 34-4 F, MAIS D2 champions.
No. 22 Auburn (AL) — 36-5 F, Alabama 7A champions.
No. 23 Jasper (IN) advance to the Indiana 4A state championship game after defeating Mt. Vernon (Fortville, IN), 17-2 in 5 innings.
Jasper (30-2) recorded 11 of their 17 runs on just four hits in the second inning to dominate the game. They will face Fishers (IN) for the state title.
No. 24 Rockwall-Heath (Heath, TX) defeated Keller (TX), 4-2 to capture the Texas 6A state title and finish 38-11-1. Reliever Caden Fiveash finished the game for a win, allowing no runs and striking out 3. He also had a hit and RBI at the plate. He was named the game’s MVP.
No. 25 Providence (Charlotte, NC) advances to the state playoffs with a 15-2 record. They face Reagan (Pfafftown, NC).
No. 26 Friendswood (TX) — 31-4 F, season over.
No. 27 New Albany (OH) eliminated Walsh Jesuit (OH), 6-2 and beat Elder (OH), 6-5 to win the Ohio Division I championship. They finished 29-5.
No. 28 Liberty (MO) — 32-9 F, Missouri 6A state champions.
No. 29 La Habra (CA) won its first CIF Southern Division 6 title after defeating Elsinore (CA), 8-4. Josh Castillo went 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out 6 in the championship game. The Highlanders finished 23-10.
No. 30 Butler (Vandalia, OH) 28-3 F, season over.
Falling out of the poll are Walsh Jesuit (Cuyahoga Falls, OH), Smithson Valley (Spring Branch, TX), Gregory-Portland (Portland, TX), Mamaroneck (NY), Keller (TX) and Fort Zumwalt West (O’Fallon, MO).
The final poll for the 2021 season will be published by July 5, 2021.
