ARGYLE (TX) NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. — Argyle (TX) moves back into the No. 1 position in the latest Collegiate Baseball National High School Poll presented by Diamond Pro.
Argyle (27-1-1), the No. 1 pre-season pick after rolling to a 37-0 record last season, is currently on a 15-game winning streak.
The Eagles have only lost one game this season to Southlake Carroll (TX) in March and tied a game in February with Corpus Christi Ray (TX).
Argyle has only lost once in its last 66 games over the past two seasons.
The Eagles are hitting .326 as a team and averaging 7.83 runs per contest with a 3.10 ERA. Argyle has stolen 81 bases and hit 51 doubles, 17 triples and 11 homers.
Individually, several players have been superb this season, including: CF/RHP Dillon Carter (.392, 2 2B, 5 3B, 2 HR, 16 RBI, 15 SB, 0.55 ERA, 20 K, 5 BB, 3-0 record, 5 SV), SS Brenden Dixon (.364, 6 2B, 4 HR, 14 SB), RF Hayden Clearman (.355, 12 2B), RHP Chad Ricker (1.14 ERA, 50 K, 19 BB, 5-0 record) and RHP Tate Van Poppel (1.86 ERA, 47 K, 13 BB, 7-0 record).
No. 2 DeSoto Central (Southaven, MS) is 26-2 and is No. 1 in Mississippi’s 6A division. In the last 6 games, the Jaguars have outscored opponents 60-4. Leading the offense are Blaze Jordan (.448, 8 HR, 36 RBI), Kamren James (.451, 6 HR, 26 RBI, 33 RS) and Kyle Booker (.417, 34 RS).
Top pitchers include Cade Smith (6-1, 1.02 ERA, 58 K, 34 IP), Kamren James (5-0, 1.75 ERA, 42 K, 28 IP) and Colby Crocker (6-1, 1.09 ERA, 25.2 IP).
No. 3 Georgetown (TX) is 28-2-1 and recently defeated previous No. 1 Lake Travis (TX), 7-5. They won their district championship by beating Hutto, 4-0 and 3-2 and finishing district play 12-0.
Jack Brinley tossed a one-hitter in the 4-0 win over Hutto. Earlier he threw a no-hitter in a 10-0 victory over Cedar Creek (TX). He is 7-0 and has allowed just 4 earned runs all year. In a 12-0 win over Cedar Creek, Grant Wood tossed a perfect game, striking out 8 in 7 innings. He threw just 89 pitches.
No. 4 Orange Lutheran (Orange, CA) is 22-4. The Lancers lead the Trinity League with an 11-1 record that includes three wins over JSerra Catholic and a 2-1 record against Servite (CA).
The pitching staff has thrown 10 shutouts this season. Jonathan Guzman led the team to a 4-0 victory over JSerra. He pitched 5 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing only four hits and striking out 7. In a 1-0 win over Servite, Guzman struck out 9.
The Lancers are No. 1 in the Los Angeles Times rankings.
No. 5 Cypress Ranch (Cypress, TX) has a 25-2-1 record and is 14-0 in district play. They are ranked No. 1 in Texas 6A by several organizations. In a 3-2 win over Bryan (TX), Matt Thompson struck out 12. JJ Goss tossed a 5-inning no-hitter with 9 strikeouts to defeat Bryan, 11-0.
No. 6 New Hanover (Wilmington, NC) has a 16-1 record after posting a recent 2-1 loss to T.C. Roberson (Asheville, NC); however, they are 10-0 in conference play. In a 7-0 win over Garner Magnet, Blake Walston struck out 13.
No.7 Barbe (Lake Charles, LA) ended its regular season with a 31-3 record and 13-1 in district play. They head into the state playoff race now. Junior SS Davis Mench is currently on a 15-game hitting streak. He hit safely in all 14 district games.
No. 8 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, FL) is 17-2 and had a 15-game wins streak broken with a 5-1 loss to Barron Collier. However, they are ranked No. 1 in Florida’s 8A. Over the last 49 games dating back to last year’s state championship season, the team has posted a 44-5 record.
No. 9 Cypress (CA) posted a 24-3 record after winning its last 9 games including beating Kennedy (La Palma, CA) 5-2 and 4-0. They are No. 2 in the Los Angeles Times rankings.
New to the poll is No. 10 Mosley (Lynn Haven, FL) with an 18-1 record. They are the top team in Florida’s 6A. Pitchers Jaden Rudd and Brayden Gainey combined for a one-hit 3-0 shutout against Leon (Tallahasee, FL).
No. 11 Benedictine (Richmond, VA) is one of the few ranked teams with an unblemished record at 19-0. They have posted 7 shutouts this season.
No. 12 Lake Travis (Austin, TX) is 25-2, lost its second game of the season to Georgetown, 7-5. They are ranked No. 2 in the state polls in Texas 6A. In a recent 17-0 win over Del Valle (TX), Brett Baty blasted two homers and posted 3 RBI.
No. 13 Colleyville Heritage (Colleyville, TX) is 26-2 and 12-0 in district play. They recently lost to Bell (Hurst, TX) 8-0 and are No. 2 in Texas 5A.
No. 14 Malvern Prep (Malvern, PA) posted a 17-2 record after dropping a game earlier this month to Germantown Academy, 6-4. Chris Newell collected his 100th career hit recently.
No. 15 Jesuit (Tampa, FL) posted an 18-2 record and faces two big challenges in the next two weeks against Calvary Christian (Clearwater, FL) and IMG Academy (Bradenton, FL).
No. 16 Delbarton (Morristown, NJ) is 8-1. After going 2-1 in the National High School Invitational, Delbarton has won 6 straight games against local competition.
New to the poll is No. 17 De La Salle (Concord, CA) with an 18-1 record. The Spartans won the All Catholic Classic beating St. Laurence (Burbank, IL) 8-2, Marian Catholic (Chicago Heights, IL) 12-1, Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, NJ) 7-5 and Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) 9-0. They are the No. 1 team in the CIF North Coast Section Division 1.
No. 18 Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, CA) is 22-3-1 and ranked No. 3 in the Los Angeles Times poll after a three-game sweep of St. Francis (La Canada, CA) and Loyola (Los Angeles, CA).
No. 19 Bryant (AR) posted a 23-2 record and has a 15-game win streak.
No. 20 Mountain Vista (Highlands Ranch, CO) is 13-2 with a 9-game win streak over Colorado competition that includes wins over Regis Jesuit, 5-1, Rocky Mountain, 10-2 and Cherry Creek, 15-2.
No. 21 St. Laurence (Burbank, IL) is 20-1 with its only loss to De La Salle during the All Catholic Classic. They beat Don Bosco Prep, 8-3 and Marian Catholic, 8-2. Several challenging two-game series will be coming up against local competition — St. Rita, Providence Catholic and Brother Rice.
New to the poll is No. 22 Walsh Jesuit (Cuyahoga Falls, OH) which posted a 13-1 record. The pitching staff has recorded a 1.29 team ERA led by Nathan Stahl ( 4-0, 0.36 ERA, 31 K, 19.1 IP). Offensively, the team is hitting .404 with 122 RBI.
No. 23 Parkview (Lilburn, GA) won its 23rd region championship and finished the regular season with a 26-4 record and No. 1 ranking in Georgia 7A. The state playoffs will begin later this week.
No. 24 Rio Rancho (NM) has an 8-game win streak and posted a 20-2 record. They are 5-0 in district play.
No. 25 Valley Christian (San Jose, CA) posted a 19-4 record and is No. 1 in the West Catholic Athletic League with 7 straight wins against league competition.
New to the poll is No. 26 Blanchard, OK which is undefeated at 30-0 as they wrap up the regular season and head to the state playoffs. They are No. 1 in Oklahoma’s 4A and have posted 13 shutouts. In a 1-0 Victory over Ada (OK), Jace Beck struck out 11 while Colby Reed struck out 12 in a 8-0 win over Bishop Kelley.
Saint Xavier (Louisville, KY) dropped to No. 27 after posting a 15-3 record, but is still ranked high in state polls.
No. 28 Mesquite (Gilbert, AZ) is 24-4 as it heads into the state playoffs. They have a 15-game win streak.
No. 29 Calvary Christian (Clearwater, FL) dropped down in the poll after going 16-3.
No. 30 American Heritage (Plantation, FL) is 14-4 after dropping a couple of games to Calvary Christian Academy (Fort Lauderdale, FL) 4-1 and Park Vista (FL) 6-5.
Teams that fell out of the poll include Mason, OH 14-3; Owasso, OK 26-5; Desert Oasis, NV 21-6; Har-Ber, AR 18-6; and Providence, NC 19-3.
Teams to watch are Sam Houston (Lake Charles, LA) 30-4; TC Roberson (Asheville, NC) 16-4; St. Rita (Chicago, IL) 16-2; Nova (Davie, FL) 17-1; and Prosper, TX 26-4.
