JESUIT H.S. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. — Jesuit (Tampa, FL) is No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball’s first regular-season National High School Poll presented by Diamond Pro.
The Tigers (3-0) kicked off the season with wins over Largo (FL), 9-1, Osceola (Seminole, FL), 10-3 and Tampa Catholic (Tampa, FL), 12-0. This extends Jesuit’s current winning streak to 20 games dating back to 2019.
In the first three games, the Tigers hit .402 with 21 extra base hits led by seniors SS Bradke Lohry (.545, 2 2B, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 2 SB) and OF BJ Graham (.600, 2 2B, 5 RBI, 2 SB).
As far as pitching, the staff has a 1.11 ERA with 33 strikeouts. During the win over Tampa Catholic, three pitchers combined for a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts.
RHP Alden Segui, also a senior, has recorded two wins in appearances against Largo and Tampa Catholic. In 4 innings, he has a 1.75 ERA, 10 strikeouts and 4 walks. Segui, who signed to play at North Carolina next year, throws a mid-90s fastball that has touched 97 mph with great stuff, according to head coach Miguel Menendez.
No. 2 JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, CA) will begin on March 19.
No. 3 Buford (GA) kicked off the season with a 5-0 record that features four shutouts. The Wolves beat Parkview (Lilburn, GA), 3-0, Lambert (Suwanee, GA), 7-2, Mill Creek (Hoschton, GA), 2-0, Shiloh (Snellville, GA), 10-0 and 9-0.
In the Parkview win, RHP Dylan Lesko, RHP Jackson Gaspard and RHP Riley Stanford combined for a no-hitter. Lesko struck out 9 in 4 innings, Gaspard Struck out 4 in 2 innings while Stanford struck out 3 in the seventh. Lesko pitched a second no-hitter in the 10-0 win over Shiloh. He struck out 9 in 5 innings.
No. 4 Orange Lutheran (Orange, CA) starts March 19.
No. 5 Hamilton (Chandler, AZ) starts March 12.
No. 6 St. Mary’s (Orchard Lake, MI) starts March 31.
No. 7 Reagan (Pfafftown, NC) will not be allowed to start until April 27. State officials have pushed the baseball state tournament to the end of June due to concerns about COVID-19.
No. 8 Baylor (Chattanooga, TN) starts March 15.
No. 9 Ronald Reagan (San Antonio, TX) is 6-1 with a 1-0 record in district play. The Rattlers beat Texas teams Lee, 27-0, Waco Midway, 3-2, McNeil, 14-0, San Angelo Central, 6-0, Stony Point, 2-1, Georgetown, 5-4 and lost to Round Rock, 3-5.
No. 10 Calvary Christian Academy (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) began the season 3-0 with wins over Flanagan (Pembroke Pines, FL), 15-5, Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, FL), 4-0 and Miami Christian (FL), 7-0.
Against Chaminade-Madonna, RHP Andrew Painter struck out 6 in 4 innings to secure the win.
No. 11 Farragut (Knoxville, TN) starts on March 16.
No. 12 Calvary Christian (Clearwater, FL) started the season with a 4-1 record with the only loss being against Lakeland Christian, 4-2.
Leading the team is sophomore INF/RHP Landen Maroudis, who is hitting .571 in 5 games with 2 doubles, a home run and 4 RBI. He recorded a 5-4 win against River Ridge (New Port Richey, FL). In four innings, he posted a 1.75 ERA with 3 strikeouts.
No. 13 Owasso (OK) starts March 1.
No. 14 Lake Travis (Austin, TX) played in a late February tournament to start the season and went 4-0-1. The Cavaliers defeated Texas teams, Flower Mound, 9-6, Southlake Carroll, 8-1, Prosper, 5-4, and South Grand, 1-0. They tied Marcus, 3-3 in the final game.
No. 15 Charlotte Christian (Charlotte, NC) starts March 6.
No. 16 John Carroll Catholic (Fort Pierce, FL) ticked off four straight wins to start the season.
They defeated Florida schools Winter Haven, 8-3, American Heritage (Delray), 11-1, Westwood, 11-1 and Sebastian, 6-0.
Leading the team in offense are Braden Calise (.533, 3 2B, 8 RBI) and Jay Allen (.308, 1 RBI, 3 SB). RHP Calise recorded two saves, an 0.00 ERA with 8 strikeouts.
Pitcher Marcos Gamboa got the win against American Heritage (Delray). He allowed 1 run with 2 hits, 10 strikeouts, 4 walks in 5 innings of work.
No. 17 De La Salle (Concord, CA) will begin March 17.
No. 18 Barbe (Lake Charles, LA) kicked off the season with 5 straight wins against all Louisiana teams.
The Buccaneers defeated Sulphur, 2-0, Glenmora, 10-0 and 15-2, Tioga, 6-0, and West Monroe, 5-2.
No. 19 Malvern Prep (Malvern, PA) begins March 13.
No. 20 Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, FL) began the season with a 5-1 record. Against all Florida schools, the Eagles defeated Belen Jesuit, 7-1, American Heritage (Plantation), 1-0, St. Thomas Aquinas, 3-2, Coral Reef, 12-2, Taravella, 7-3 and lost to Palm Beach Gardens, 7-4.
Two juniors lead the pitching staff in RHP Derek Rodriguez (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 3 BB, 5 K) and LHP Chris Arroyo (2-0, 1.50 ERA, 3 BB, 10 K).
No. 21 Doral Academy (Doral, FL) is 2-1-1 to begin the season. Against Florida teams, they tied 4-4 with Archbishop McCarthy, defeated Miami Christian, 6-3, Key West, 8-1 and lost to St. Thomas Aquinas, 6-0.
No. 22 Providence (Charlotte, NC) will not be allowed to start its season until April 27.
No. 23 Madison-Ridgeland (Madison, MS) is 5-1 with wins over Winston Academy, 15-1, Canton Academy, 19-0, Riverfield Academy (LA), 12-2, Hernando, 17-7, Lafayette, 5-1 and a loss to Grenada, 5-4.
Top hitters include Toby Trowbridge (.611, 4 2B, 14 RBI), Hayes Puckett (.545, 2 2B, 1 3B, 7 RBI, 13 RS), Peyton Martin (.352, 3 2B, 10 RBI and Bryce Chance (.538, 5 2B, 6 RBI, 8 RS).
Brayden Jones leads the pitching staff with a 2-0 record, 0.00 ERA, 3 walks, 14 strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings.
No. 24 Millard West (Omaha, NE) begins March 18.
No. 25 Walsh Jesuit (Cuyahoga Falls, OH) starts March 30.
No. 26 Jesuit Dallas (Dallas, TX) is 5-1. The Rangers defeated Texas schools Azle, 14-1, Burleson, 7-1, Weatherford, 5-1, Abilene, 6-0 and Aledo, 10-2 and lost to Nolan Catholic, 2-7.
Jordan Lawlar leads the offense with a .474 batting average, 4 2B, 1 3B, 4 RBI and 7 SB.
No. 27 Madison Central (Madison, MS) is 3-0 with two no-hitters against North Pike (MS), 12-0 and Tuscaloosa Co. (AL), 10-0.
No. 28 Red Land (Lewisberry, PA) begins April 1.
No. 29 Thousand Oaks (CA) is slated to start March 22.
No. 30 Heritage Hall (Oklahoma City, OK) starts March 2.
Dropped from the pre-season poll are Venice (FL), 3-2 and Carroll (Southlake, TX) 1-4.
