PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release:
Tuesday (Sept. 20, 2011)
SOUTH CAROLINA WINS NCAA
DIVISION I RECRUITING TITLE
TUCSON, Ariz. — South Carolina landed the No.
1 recruiting class in the nation, according to Collegiate Baseball
newspaper’s annual evaluation of NCAA Division I baseball classes.
It marks the Gamecocks’ fourth national
recruiting title in the 29-year history of the rankings. South Carolina also
landed No. 1 classes in 2006, 2005 and 2003. In eight of the last nine years, a
team from the Southeastern Conference has been the outright recruiting champion
or tied for first.
The rankings are based on players who enroll
at school each fall. Athletes who initially signed with a school and then signed
a pro contract after being drafted do not count in the overall evaluation.
Of the 22 man recruiting haul landed by South
Carolina, seven were drafted last June. The class features 16 freshmen, five
junior college transfers and one 4-year transfer.
The drafted players include:
 | RHP Evan Beal (South County H.S., Fairfax
Station, VA), 8th round pick by Royals. |
 | OF Tanner English (St. James H.S.,
Murrels Inlet, S.C.), 13th round pick by Rays. |
 | RHP Joel Seddon (St. Clair H.S., MI), 20th
round pick by Blue Jays. |
 | INF T.J. Costen (First Colonial H.S.,
Virginia Beach, VA), 22nd round pick by Rangers. |
 | INF Joey Pankake (Easley H.S., S.C.), 42nd
round pick by Rangers. |
 | OF Shon Carson (Lake City H.S., S.C.), 44th
round pick by Reds. |
 | INF Ahmad Christian (Trinity Christian
H.S., Jacksonville, FL), 46th round pick by Brewers. |
"We are ecstatic with this group of newcomers
that have entered our program," said South Carolina recruiting coordinator Chad
Holbrook.
"This is a class we are excited about because
of its depth, athleticism and versatility. We have a talented group of young,
athletic infielders with the addition of Joey Pankake, T.J. Costen, Connor
Bright, Tanner English and Shon Carson. English and Carson were labeled as two
of the best available athletes in the 2011 MLB draft.
"We also feel Grayson Greiner was one of the
best high school catchers in the country and only because of signability issues
was he not drafted in the first 10 rounds. It is also a class with experience
and maturity with the addition of our JC signees.
"We think that our pitching signees will
contribute immediately (RHP Evan Beal, LHP Jordan Montgomery, RHP Joel Seddon).
Our JC signees have had great success at the college level, and they add
maturity and experience to our 2012 team.
"We felt it was important to have some balance
with high school and junior college recruits to help replace some of the
experience we lost in 2011.
"Collectively, we believe it’s a talented
class that will hopefully continue to put us in a position to compete for SEC
championships and trips to the College World Series."
Other quality players the Gamecocks landed
include:
 | INF L.B. Dantzler (State College of
Florida-Manatee (Winter Haven, Fla.), NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American. |
 | 1B Kyle Martin (Wade Hampton H.S.,
Simpsonville, S.C.), South Carolina All-State. |
 | INF Mikal Hill (Mallard Creek H.S.,
Charlotte, N.C.), 2011 Max Preps Player of The Year in North Carolina. |
 | RHP Hunter Privette (Florence Darlington
Tech., Hartsville, S.C.), 8-2 record in 2011. |
 | INF Tanner Lovick (Pitt C.C., N.E.). |
The following are the top 40
rankings of NCAA Division I recruiting classes for 2011 as determined by the
staff of Collegiate Baseball newspaper. A complete rundown of the top
10 classes is in the Oct. 1, 2011 edition of Collegiate Baseball.
