College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Friday (Jan. 28, 2011) SUMRALL (MISS.) H.S. NO. 1 IN EASTON SPORTS NATIONAL PRE-SEASON POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — Sumrall H.S., Miss. (35-1) finished last season as the No. 1 team in the land and will start the 2011 campaign as the top team in the 2011 Easton National High School pre-season poll. The Bobcats captured their third straight 3A Mississippi state championship and are looking for a fourth. Last season Sumrall outscored opponents 426-57. Of the team's 35 wins, 26 were by mercy rule. At one point during the season, Sumrall ended a 67-game win streak dating back to 2008. Returning to anchor the pitching staff is LHP Luke Lowery, who has a 24-1 career record. Last season he was 11-1 with a 1.13 ERA, 102 strikeouts, 19 walks in 62 innings. The No. 2 starter is expected to be Tyler Simmons who was 9-0 with a 2.14 ERA, 67 strikeouts in 49 innings. Top hitters are 2B/SS Conner Barron (.514, 12 2B, 6 HR, 60 RBI, 21 SB), C Austin Knight (.429, 11 2B, 26 RBI), OF Austin Carter (.380, 5 2B, 4 HR, 36 RBI) and 2B Bradley Smith (.458, 2 HR, 18 RBI). The Bobcats also have added trasnfer P/SS Brandon Pennington from Northwest Rankin HS to their roster. With 11 seniors on the 2011 squad, Sumrall will have an extremely experience ball club returning.
