College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Tuesday (June 2, 2009) MENCHVILLE H.S. NO. 1 IN EASTON SPORTS COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — Menchville High School (Newport News, Va.) remains No. 1 for the third straight time in the Easton Sports National High School poll with a 23-2 record. The Monarchs begin the state playoffs this week. In the Virginia Eastern Regional tournament, they beat First Colonial, 4-2, and Indian River, 5-3, but lost to Cox, 2-4 in the final game. Both Cox and Menchville advanced to the state tournament. Bellaire (Houston, Tex.) drops from No. 2 to No. 18 after losing to Brazoswood two of three games in the Region III-5A semi-finals. Brazoswood will make its seventh trip to the regional finals in school history and it first since 1992. Foy H. Moody (Corpus Christi, TX) moves to No.2 with a 34-2 record. They will face No. 7 Calallen (Corpus Christi, TX) for a best 2-of-3 regional playoff this week. Moody’s Justin Meza and Andrew Cantu are both 13-0 on the season and Christian Gallegos, Rudy Flores and Justin Perales all are hitting over .450. Calallen’s Jordan John has a 12-0 record with a 0.21 ERA and 124 strikeouts. Leading the offense is Matt Garza who was hitting .516 with 41 stolen bases. No. 3 Naples, Fla. won the Florida 4A state championship beating Lake Wales and finishing the season 33-1. No. 4 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) completed its season 40-4 and won the Nevada 4A state championship for the fourth consecutive time. In that four year span, the Gaels are 12-0 in state competition with a 152-20 record. The Gales defeated Cimarron-Memorial, 3-1 for the title. Joey Rickard pitched 5.1 innings, allowing three hits. Jeff Malm came in for relief, striking out four batters and allowing no runs No. 5 Chatsworth, Calif. won the City Section championship by defeating Reseda Cleveland, 9-0. Carlos Escobar Jr. hit a three-run homer and LHP Mike Renner threw a two-hit shutout to clinch the victory. This was Chatsworth’s ninth City title in baseball, eight for Coach Tom Meusborn and sixth this decade. It was the first time a team has won three in a row since Los Angeles Fremont in the 1940s. No. 8 Farragut (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished the season winning the Tennessee 3A state championship by defeated Mt. Juliet, 2-1. No. 9 Omaha Westside, Neb. defeated Omaha Creighton Prep, 6-5 in 8 innings to capture the Nebraska state championship. In the top of the eighth inning, Alec Williams hit a three-run inside the park home run to push the Warriors to a 6-3 lead in the game. They hung on for the win. Sumrall, Miss. jumps into the poll at No. 10 after going undefeated for the season and capturing its second straight Mississippi 3A state championship. They are the first team in Mississippi state to go undefeated since 1996. Brenham, Tex. continues its question to get into the state tournament with regional finals this week. Pitcher Chase Wellbrock is 11-0 with a 1.14 ERA and allowed only six walks in 68 innings. No 12. Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) was lifted by a grand slam from Cory Hahn off of Norco’s RHP Matt Hobgood to with the Southern Section Division I quarterfinal playoff game, 7-4. Norco was the top-seeded team for that game with potential top draft pick Hobgood on the mound. Hobgood came into the game with an 11-0 record and 0.33 ERA. Hahn’s clutch hit was no fluke as he hit his second home run of the game off of Hobgood in the sixth. Mater Dei’s Aaron Northcraft got the win, and Matt Blanchard got the save, striking out all four batters he faced. Cathedral (Indianapolis, Ind.) jumps into the poll at No. 13. They are undefeated this season with 23 wins and won the first round of the sectionals by beating Lawrence north, 6-5. No. 14 Walsh Jesuit, Ohio advances to the state final four after beating Lima Shawnee, 10-0 in five innings. RHP Greg Greve faced one batter over the minimum, striking out five and improved to 7-0 on the season. North Shore (Slidell, LA) moves into the poll after finishing its season as the Louisiana 5A state championship with a 34-2 record. George Washington, NY dropped down to No. 22 after losing in the quarter-finals and finishing with a 41-5 record. Columbus, Ga. lost its bid for a state title after being stunned by Cartersville, 10-7 in the championship game. This was Cartersville second straight 3A title. After posting a 55-game win streak against New Jersey schools, No. 24 Don Bosco Prep’s season came to an end when the Ironmen suffered a 7-6 loss to St. Joseph in the state tournament. The Ironmen were down 6-0 in the first two innings and tried to battle back but couldn’t recover. No. 29 Brownsburg, Ind. is battling in the sectionals. They recently defeated Indianapolis Manual, 16-0 in five innings. RHP Matt Bowman went the distance and improved to 4-0, giving up one hit and striking out 12. Earlier the Bulldogs defeated Pike, 13-0 in five innings to complete its regular season. No. 30 Brother Rice (Chicago, Ill.) was upset twice recently by Benet Academy and Andrew. Andrew recently defeated Brother Rice 12-0 with pitcher Brett Maus just overpowering the Crusaders in the regional championships. Dropped from the poll are Maize, KS 20-4 (finished 4th in the state), El Toro, CA 22-6 (lost in the second round of playoffs) and Providence, NC 23-6 (lost in playoffs).
