College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Tuesday (May 19, 2009) MENCHVILLE H.S. NO. 1 IN EASTON SPORTS COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — Menchville High School (Newport News, Va.) remains No. 1 for the second straight time in the Easton Sports National High School poll with a 19-1 record. The Monarchs recently beat Phoebus, 10-0 in the Peninsula District quarterfinals. Ethan Carter improved to 8-1 with plenty of offense from Hunter Lewis (3-for-4, 3 RBI) and Teddy Brewer (2-for-3, home run, 3 RBI). No. 2 Bellaire, Tex. remains the No. 1 team in the Texas state poll as the playoffs begin with a 29-1-1 record. Foy H. Moody (Corpus Christi, TX) is No. 3. The pitching staff remains strong with Justin Meza (11-0, 0.53 ERA) Andrew Cantu (11-0, 1.02 ERA, 93 K) and A.J. Longoria (4-0). The offense is lead by Christian Gallegos (.471, 32 RBI, 12 2B), Rudy Flores (.465, 41 RBI, 7 HR), Meza (.392, 37 RBI, 5 HR) and Michael Franco (.434, 41 RBI, 14 2B, 5 HR). No. 4 Naples, Fla. has a sterling 31-0 record. No. 6 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas. NV) had its 34-game win streak broken when they lost to Cimarron-Memorial in the Sunset Regional championship game, 10-2. However, they qualified for the state playoffs. Jeff Malm is on track to top the national all-time hits record for a career. The national record, according to the National High School Federation, is 277 and Malm currently has 275. Yucaipa, Calif. moves up to No. 7. The Thunderbirds have been averaging 10.5 runs a game. They have 10 players hitting over .400. No. 8 Owasso, Okla. won its third consecutive 6A state championship. Pitcher Austin Kirk won three games in the state tournament, two as a starter, including the championship game. The team hit .435 in six tournament games with senior SS Austen Colt hitting .625 with 9 runs, two doubles, two triples and two home runs. No. 9 Callallen (Corpus Christi, TX) heads into the Texas state playoffs with a strong 29-2 record. Jordan John is 12-0 on the season while Matthew Garza is hitting .532. Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, NJ) moves up to No. 12 with a 16-game winning streak. They won the NNJIL conference championship, beating Paramus Catholic, 11-2. Leading the offense is Anthony Gomez (.446, 20 RBI), Brett Knieff (.515, 27 RBI) and Chris Picyk (.500, 25 RBI). On the mound, Niko Spezial has a 6-1 record with a 1.87 ERA, 66 strikeouts in 47.1 innings. Chatsworth, Calif. is No. 13 after losing to Taft 11-7 in the West Valley League season finale. That game ended the Chancellors consecutive league titles at six. Cleveland clinched the title. The team is preparing for the City Section playoffs. No. 14 Sylvan Hills (Sherwood, AR) was upset 3-2 in the semi-final round of the state championships by Central Arkansas Christian. They broke their school record for wins with 32 this season, and seven of their players will go on to college. No. 15 La Cueva (Albuquerque, NM) lost its bid for another state title by losing in the championship game, 6-5 to Rio Rancho. No. 16 Farragut (Knoxville, Tenn.) won both its district and regional championship and is starting their state tournament. No. 17 Maize, Kan. is preparing for the regional tournament which will determine whether they will go on to the state playoffs. No. 19 El Toro, Calif. won the Sea View League championship for the third straight year. Leading the team is Aaron Wirsch (10-0, 1.49 ERA, .329 BA, 12 HR, 30 RBI), Nolan Arenado (.519, 4 HR, 14 2B, 22 RBI) and Garrett Donohoe (.475, 22 RBI). No. 23 Reagan, Tex. heads into the second round of the state playoffs after defeating Pflugerville Connally, 11-7. Vinny Postert hit a grand slam to help win the game. Notre Dame Prep (Scottsdale, Ariz.) dropped to No. 25 after losing to Mingus in the state championship game, 7-4. Rocky Mountain, CO moved into the No. 26 spot after capturing its third straight 5A state championship. Interestingly, pitcher Marco Gonzales has pitched the title-clinching game for the past three years for Rocky Mountain. Three years ago, he defeated Wheat Ridge, then Air Academy in 2008 and now Mountain Vista. The junior allowed only four hits and struck out eight in 6 1/3 innings against Mountain Vista. Brother Rice (Chicago, IL) moves into the poll at No. 29 after posting a 27-game win streak before losing its first game of the season to St. Rita Batavia, 4-0. Charlotte Christian, NC moves into the poll at No. 30 after winning the NCISAA championship. They beat Wesleyan Academy, 8-5 for the title, breaking a 5-5 tie with three runs in the seventh inning. Dropped from the poll is Lakeland, FL 23-4 F, Florida Christian, 23-5 F, and Cherry Creek, Colo. 22-4 F. Other High School Notes: Glenwood HS (Phenix City, AL) won its third state championship in five years. They won 18 of their last 20 games to close the season and finish with a 38-7 record. Punahou (Honolulu, HI) won its sixth straight HHSAA state championship title. The beat Kailua, 3-2. Punahou has a 23-0 state tournament record for the years of 2004-2009. They finished 20-13-1 overall.
