College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Tuesday (April 21, 2009) JESUIT H.S. (TAMPA, FLA.) NO. 1 IN EASTON SPORTS COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — Jesuit High School (Tampa, Fla.), undefeated at 22-0, has been ranked No. 1 for the third straight Easton Sports National High School poll. Jesuit won its annual Easter tournament recently as the team is hitting .400 and has a 1.71 team ERA. Top hitters include Nick Lockwood (.419, 9 2B, 5 HR, 23 RBI) and Greg Dupell (.482, 4 2B, 2 3B, 5 HR, 30 RBI).Pitcher Willi Martin has 7 wins with 32 strikeouts and 5 walks in 37 2/3 innings while Daniel Gibson is 6-0 with 47 strikeouts and 15 walks in 41 1/3 innings. No. 2 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) won the Anderson Bat National Classic tournament by beating El Toro, Calif., 2-1. Ruben Orosco and Matt Blanchard combined to limit El Toro to just one run on four hits while Brian Frattali hit a two-run homer in the first inning. The Monarchs are ranked No. 1 in the Los Angeles area. Bellaire, Tex. remains at No. 3. They continue to dominate with pitching as they shut out four of their last five opponents. The team is hitting .421 while the pitching staff has a 1.25 ERA. No. 4 Menchville (Newport News, Va.) remains unbeaten in its first 10 games. They should only get stronger now that CF Matt Armstead has returned after undergoing knee surgery on April 1. He went 2-for-3 with a double in his first outing back. No. 5 Foy H. Moody (Corpus Christi, Tex.) continues on a roll after beating cross-town rival Ray, 13-10. Pitcher Justin Meza recorded his ninth victory of the season. No. 6 is George Washington (New York, NY) despite suffering a loss recently in the final game of an Easter tournament against Norman Thomas, 6-2. Top hitters for the team are Mike Antonio (.525 BA) and Jordan Polanco (.546 BA). No. 7 Owasso, Okla. had some close games in recent action but went undefeated in its own tournament. LHP Austin Kirk won the championship game by tossing a no-hitter and driving in three runs in an 11-0 win over rival Jenks. Sylvan Hills (Sherwood, Ark.) moved to No. 8 after winning 7 of 8 games recently. D.J. Baxendale is 9-0 with a 0.28 ERA and 3 saves. Tyler Van Schoyck leads the team in hitting with a .432 batting average and 8 home runs. Nathan Eller hit .425 with 5 homers. No. 10 is Chatsworth, Calif. The Chancellors are 18-2 and one of the top teams in the Los Angeles area. CF Andrew Klausmeier hit a 3-run homer to help defeat Cleveland, 8-3 recently. Coach Tom Meusborn captured his 500th win as a head coach in late March. He is in his 20th season with the Chancellors. Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) continues to roll with 22 straight wins and moves to No. 11. The Gaels have recorded 8 run-rule games and two shutouts during the 22 consecutive victories. LHP Jeff Malm pitched shutouts in both championship games of the Desert Classic and Easter Classic. Against Newbury Park, Calif., Malm allowed just three singles and struck out 10. Stephen Manthei pitched a shutout against Douglas, Nev. in the Easter Classic striking out 14 and allowing just three hits. Yucaipai, Calif. jumps in at No. 14 after winning the USA Classic in Tennessee. Matt Davidson pitched a dominate shutout during the tournament. No. 15. Divine Child (Dearborn, Mich.) started its season at 4-2. LHP Brady Rodriguez threw a no hitter in his first outing, and in his second outing of the season, he had a perfect game going into the final inning when he gave up one hit. In 10 innings, he has 18 strikeouts and allowed one hit and no runs. No. 19 Brownsburg, Ind. has seven wins to start the season. The pitching staff has recorded a 0.93 ERA. In 45 innings, they have given up 7 runs, 6 earned, walked 16 and struck out 58. Junior RHP Dalton Wentz leads the staff with a 2-0 record, 2 saves, one hit, one walk and 25 strikeouts. No. 23 Cherry Creek (Colo.) has two no-hitters and two 1-hitters on the season. Corey Keller is leading the offense with a .623 batting average. No. 24 Florida Christian (Miami, Fla.) is on a roll with the pitching staff recording 245 strikeouts in 23 games and two exhibition games for a team ERA of 1.36. C/1B Danny Canela leads the team with 12 home runs and 26 RBI. No. 27 El Toro, Calif. were the runners-up in the National Classic. Nolan Arenado was named Most Outstanding Offensive Player in the tournament after going 8-for-12 with 2 home runs, 3 doubles, 5 RBI and 5 runs. He also pitched a complete game against Palm Beach Central, Fla., allowing 4 hits and striking out 8. Maize, Kan. joins the poll at No. 28. Garrett Gould has posted a 3-0 record with one save, 0.00 ERA, 41 strikeouts in 16 2/3 innings. The team ERA is 1.37, and the pitching staff has only given up 11 runs, 9 earned, in 7 games. No. 29 American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) is 21-3. All three losses are by one run. Since starting 0-2, they have won 21 of the last 22 games including a win over Nova, 10-0 in the Nova Titan Classic. Jim Nesselt leads the pitching staff with 8-0 record and 1.59 ERA. Dropped from the poll is Capistrano Valley, Calif, 14-5, Blue Valley, Kan. 4-2, Don Bosco Prep, NJ 4-3 and Mamaroneck, NY 2-3.
