College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (June 9, 2008) DON BOSCO PREP NO. 1 IN EASTON SPORTS COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL TUCSON, Ariz. —Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, NJ) did the unbelievable. Not only did the Ironmen run the table and win 33 straight games in a row to finish their season as the Non-Public A champions in New Jersey, but they remained the No. 1 team in the Easton National High School poll throughout the entire season. The Ironmen’s season came down to the top of the seventh inning in the title game against Christian Brothers Academy. Don Bosco led 5-4 and needed just three outs to win the title and finish a perfect season. Despite Christian Brothers getting runners on base, Don Bosco managed to get out of the inning with no runs scoring and the win. Don Bosco is the first team to win all three Bergen County tournament titles and is the first Bergen County team in 58 years to go undefeated. The Ironmen defeated St. Joseph, 13-5 for the league title, Seton Hall Prep, 3-2 for the North Non-Public A title and Christian Brothers for the state Non-Public A title, all in a seven day time period. For the season, the Ironmen outscored opponents 414 to 48. As a team, they hit .446 and had a team ERA of 1.27. Top hitters included Steve Proscia (.545, 9 HR, 45 RBI), Eric Pfisterer (.525, 48 RBI) and Ben Luderer (.500, 39 RBI). Pitchers Mike Dennhardt and Pfisterer finished 10-0 on the season. Numerous teams in the poll have finished their seasons and many have won their respective state titles. No. 2 American Heritage (Fla.) beat John Carroll, 8-2 for its state championship. No. 3 Bishop Gorman (Nev.) defeated Green Valley, 8-3 for its state title. No. 5 Plano West (Tex.) beat Southlake Carroll, 10-8 for the Texas 5A championship. No. 6 Brookwood (Ga.) captured the state’s 5A title by beating Walton, 3-2 and 6-3. No. 7 Pleasure Park Ridge (Ky.) won its semi-final game 15-0 over Anderson County to advance in the state tournament. George Washington (NY) is at No. 8 after winning the PSAL title with a 4-0 win over James Madison. No. 9 Calallen (Tex.) captured its state title by beating Waxahachie 11-1. No. 10 Mamaroneck (NY) won the section title with a 12-1 victory over Suffern, while No. 11 Poway (Calif.) moves up after winning the San Diego CIF division by defeating Costa Canyon 8-3. Brookland-Cayce (SC) moved into No. 14 after winning the 3A state title by beating A.C. Flora, 3-1. Simi Valley (Calif.) moved into the No. 15 spot by winning the CIF Southern Division I championship over Woodrow Wilson, 4-1 in 9 innings. Barbe (La) also won its state title and moves into the No. 16 spot. Lakota West (Ohio) dropped its chance for back-to-back state titles by losing in the semi-finals to Lakewood St. Edward, 6-3. They move down to No. 18. Tupelo (Miss.) also dropped down after losing the state title game. Lake Orion (Mich.) lost its chance for a repeat state title after losing in the district tournament. Spanning two seasons, they posted a 28 game win streak before dropping a regular season game. For the season, their 27 wins is a single season school record. However, they dropped down to No. 21 in the poll. Farragut (Tenn.) moved into the No. 25 spot after winning its state championship. Walsh Jesuit (Ohio) moved into the No. 26 spot. They won the Ohio Division II state championship with a 6-0 victory over Canal Winchester. This was their third title in the last five years. Teams that dropped out of the poll are New Trier (Ill.), Patriot (Calif.), Riverside (S.C.), Moody (Tex.) and Plant (Fla.).
