College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (July 2, 2007) SETON HALL PREP NO. 1 IN FINAL EASTON SPORTS COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — In the final Easton National High School Poll of the season, Seton Hall Prep (West Orange, NJ) captured the title as the No. 1 team in the nation. The Pirates finished the season with a 32-1 record, capturing its state title. They were led this season by RHP Rick Porcello, who was a first round draft pick by the Detroit Tigers. He also signed for a full scholarship at the University of North Carolina. Porcello, whose fastball has been clocked at 97 mph, was 10-0 this spring with a 1.18 ERA, 112 strikeouts and 15 walks in 71 innings. He also led the team in hitting with a .478 batting average, 11 home runs and 48 RBI. Also helping to make the team among the best in the nation was RHP Evan Danieli and OF Steven Brooks, both received honors this season for their contributions to the team. Danieli also was drafted last month and has a commitment to Notre Dame. Some shuffling took place in this final poll of the season with several state champions moving ahead of teams that lost in their regionals or state playoff competition. Grosse Pointe North (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI), arguably one of the best teams in Michigan this season, dropped to No. 20 in the poll after losing in the quarter finals of the state playoffs. Norwell (Ossian, IN) moved up to No. 10 after going undefeated this season and winning the 3A Indiana state championship. The mantra of this year’s team was LND (Leave No Doubt). Norwell defeated Evansville Mater Dei, 5-0 for the state title. In doing so, the team etched itself in the IHSAA record books with the most wins (35), second best team runs scored (393), third most RBI (318), and fifth best team batting average (.407), according to the Journal Gazette. Jarrod Parker, who was drafted last month by the Arizona Diamondbacks, led the team with a 12-0 record, giving up only one run (0.10 ERA) in 70 innings. In the title game, Parker allowed only six hits, struck out seven and hit a two-run home run to help win the championship. East Rutherford (Forest City, NC) moves into the No. 28 spot after winning the 2A state championship. They finished 31-2 with the second most wins in NCHSAA history, hit a state record 55 home runs, and finishing with a .400 team batting average. The team had four Division I signees and two juniors who are expected to sign with NCAA Division I schools next season. Dropped from the poll is Goddard, Kan., 18-2.
