College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (March 12, 2007) BROPHY COLLEGE PREP NO. 1 IN EASTON SPORTS COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — Brophy College Prep (Phoenix, Ariz.), 9-0 is ranked No. 1 in the first in-season Easton National High School poll of 2007. The Broncos have outscored opponents, 90-18 and have recorded four shutouts. Charles W. Flanagan H.S. (Pembroke Pines, FL), 7-2, which is considered one of the top Florida high school teams this season, is ranked second. Flanagan lost two one-run games against South Broward, 6-5 (9 innings) and Miami Springs, 13-12. Flanagan recently gave Nova H.S. (Davie, FL) its first shutout in five years after defeating them, 2-0. The game was the first meeting between the two schools in eight years. Flanagan’s R.J. Fondon hurled his first career shutout, allowing only four hits, seven strikeouts and one walk. Bellarmine Prep (San Jose, Calif.) moves to the No. 4 spot with a 7-3 record. In the first 10 games of the season, the Bells have hit 17 home runs. RHP Ben Ruder has not given up an earned run in 15 innings so far. Katy (Katy, TX), 15-3, is ranked fifth. The team has played only one game at home and most have been in tournaments that they have won. In the Katy Independent School District Tournament, the Tigers defeated Klein Collins, 7-4 for the title. They have outscored opponents, 96-11 and currently have a team batting average of .395. Five starters are hitting over .400 in Carter Jurica (.482), Michael Fuda (.473), Nick Pepitone (.464), Joey Fuda (.433) and Andrew Stumph (.414). The team ERA is 2.21 with Aaron Daab posting a 3-1 record and 0.30 ERA, 27 K in 23.7 IP. Riverside (Greer, SC) 6-2 is No. 6 having lost the International Paper Classic tournament title game to 4A Division Mauldin H.S., 7-1. Louisville Slugger All American Michael Roth is 2-0 on the mound and has not given up an earned run in 13 innings of work, and junior RHP Rob Kish also is 2-0. Top hitters for the team are seniors Mark Santoro (.500) and Jake Williams (.414). Moving up to No. 9 is Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV). They won their season opener, 11-0 in a five-inning game against Calvary Chapel of Las Vegas. Louisville Slugger All American Taylor Cole hit a 3-run homer in the game, and junior RHP Donn Roach allowed only three hits and struck out seven. Jumping to No. 11 is South Caldwell (Hudson, NC) which is undefeated at 4-0. Pitching has been the mainstay of this team’s early season with Madison Bumgarner (1-0), Jimmy Messer (2-0) and Justin Poovey (1-0) the top hurlers. Foy H. Moody (Corpus Christi, Tex.) moves into the poll at No. 12 after posting a 17-1 record. The team has played in three tournaments to start the season and won all three. The team has registered three shutouts. Mark Gomez threw a three-hit shutout against Kingsville, 11-0; Miguel Gonzalez threw a one-hit shutout against South San Antonio, 3-0; and Joey Mendoza threw a one-hit shutout against San Antonio Holmes, 4-0. Klein Collins (Spring, TX), 14-3, stands at No. 15, going into district play this week. They finished second place in the Frisco Roughriders Tournament of Champions recently with a 4-1 record. No. 16 James Monroe (Bronx, NY) started the season 2-0, outscoring opponents 28-5. The top hitter for Monroe has been Delgis Soto who has gone 5-for-7 with one triple, two home runs and 8 RBI. The Woodlands, Tex. comes in at No. 18 with a 12-3 record. No. 19 George Washington (New York, NY) started the season 1-0 defeating Luperon H.S., 18-1 in its season opener. Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. moves into the poll at No. 21 with an 11-1 record to start the season. Gardens recently beat district rival Palm Beach Central, 6-1. It was the second straight win over Palm Beach Central as the team won, 10-0 earlier. Sean Koecheler pitched both games. Gardens is the only team to have beaten Central this season, however, Central (ranked No. 10 in the pre-season) had to forfeit its first three wins due to an ineligible player. No. 22 Pace, Fla. is 6-1 with the only loss against district-foe Niceville H.S. Pace has outscored opponents, 71-15 so far. Pitcher Kia Archbell threw a no-hitter against Crestview H.S. Both CF/LHP Caleb Grindl and SS Drew Cumberland are hitting over .500. Both are expected to be high draft picks this year. Chatsworth drops to No. 23 after posting a 3-2 record to start the season. No. 25 Northwest Rankin (Brandon, Miss.) began the season undefeated at 12-0. They are now No. 1 in the state. Florida Christian (Miami, Fla.) jumps into the poll at No. 26. They started the season 10-1. Recently the Patriots defeated Gulliver Prep, 13-1 in five innings. RF David Villasuso had six RBI in that game. For the season, Villasuso has 7 home runs while C Chris Leon has four. Zachary H.S. is currently ranked No. 1 in 4A Louisiana baseball and jumped into the Easton national poll at No. 28 with a 14-1 record. Leading the pitching staff is Brandon Efferson who has given up only two earned runs in 27 innings. Brandon Barrow has not given up an earned run in five appearances. No. 29 Cullman, Ala. has an 11-3 record to start the season. They have played a tough schedule which includes participation in the LaGrange, Ga. Tournament as they were defeated by Cartersville, Ga, 11-7 in the final game. Miami Springs, Fla. drops down to No. 30 after posting an 8-3 record; However, they are 6-0 in conference play. Dropped from the poll this week are Palm Beach Central (Wellington, Fla.) 5-5; Parkview Baptist (Baton Rouge, La.) 6-6, Valhalla (El Cajon, Calif.) 2-1 and George County (Lucedale, MS).
