College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Sunday (May 7, 2006) THE WOODLANDS H.S. NO. 1 IN EASTON SPORTS COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — The dangerous time of year has arrived for many high school baseball teams which have raced through the regular season with almost spotless records. As single and double elimination district and regional tournaments leading to the state playoffs are held, upsets happen like clock work across the USA. This year Nova H.S. (Davie, Fla.), which held the No.1 position in the Easton National High School Poll for the second half of the season, has succumbed by losing a district and a regional game. Although finishing the regular season undefeated, the Titans’ hope for repeating as 5A Florida state champions has been dashed. They have fallen to the No. 9 position. However, The Woodlands (The Woodlands, Tex.) has captured its fourth consecutive district title, finishing 16-0, and is on the road for the Texas 5A state title. The Highlanders move into this week’s No. 1 spot in the Easton poll with a 28-1 overall record. While waiting to start the playoffs, the Highlanders had a tune-up game with Brenham, the No. 1 4A team in the state and No. 6 in the national rankings. The Woodlands won, 7-2. Owasso (Owasso, Okla.) becomes the No. 2 team and will be starting its road to the state finals this week. During the regionals, Joe Patterson had an outstanding performance at the plate hitting 5-for-12 with 8 RBI and three home runs. Chris Armstrong was recently named the Tulsa Metro Pitcher of the Year. He is 10-0 with a 1.57 ERA, 131 strikeouts in 67.3 innings. Jackson (Mills Creek, Wash.) has moved to the No. 3 position with a perfect 21-0 record. The Timberwolves won the first round of the Northwest 4A District tournament defeating Marysville-Pilchuck, 3-0. Cam Nobles pitched his first no-hitter of the season in that game. No. 4 Bellefontaine (Bellefontaine, Ohio) has improved to 20-2 on the season. They are lead by pitcher Chris Walden, who was 7-1. James Monroe (Bronx, N.Y.) remains at No. 5. The Eagles recently placed third in the Northeast Elite Tournament after defeating George Washington. Chatsworth (Chatsworth, Calif.) comes in at No. 7 and has been led this season by the strong hitting of two juniors, Mike Moustakas (.410, 12 HR, 34 RBI) and Matt Dominguez (.370, 8 HR,. 27 RBI). Top pitcher for the team is Trent Jones (8-1, 1.37 ERA). No. 8 Msgr. Edward Pace (Opa Locka, Fla.) hopes to advance to the state tournament for the first time since 1999. They have made it to the Class 4A regional finals after defeating Merritt Island, 5-4. Also shortstop Adrian Cardenas has broken the Dade County home run record with 17, two shy of the state record of 19. No. 10 Bellarmine Prep (San Jose, Calif.) enters the league championships as one of the top teams in the state of California. Leading on the mound is Nate Garcia (7-0, 2 saves) and Ben Ruder (8-1, 1 save). Top hitter for the team has been catcher Tommy Medica (.464 BA). Bishop Carroll Catholic (Wichita, Kan.) is No. 11 having won 32 of their last 34 games. The team featured a .391 team batting average and a 1.50 team ERA led by Austin Woodard (6-0) and Josh Bird (4-1, 3 saves). No. 12 Riverside (Greer, S.C.) has captured the Upper-State championship with a 5-4 win over A.C. Flora and is playing Dillon H.S. for the state championship. Archbishop Rummel (Metairie, La.), No. 14, won their district with a 10-2 record. They defeated Jesuit, 9-1 and 13-4 and begin play for the second round of the state playoffs. Riverside Poly (Riverside, Calif.) is now at No. 16. They have moved to the top of the rankings in the Los Angeles area. No. 17 Joliet Catholic (Joliet, Ill.) has an 11-game win streak going and is 11-2 in their conference. At No. 18, Homer (Homer, Mich.) was undefeated at 19-0 and has outscored opponents 206-18 this season. Palm Beach Central (Wellington, Fla.) is No. 21 and has made it past the quarterfinals of the Class 6A regional playoffs. RHP Mike Gipson improved to 10-1 on the season after holding down Park Vista for a 3-1 victory. No. 23 Northwest Rankin (Brandon, Miss.) is playing for the north state championship. They are led by Todd McInnis who was 9-1 with a 1.60 ERA, 105 strikeouts in 68 innings and a .395 batting average. Brownsburg (Brownsburg, Ind.) has a 6-game winning streak in which the team has scored 61 runs. SS T.J. Baumet has led the team with a .519 batting average and Michael Bradburn was hitting .448 with six doubles, two triples and five home runs. Leading on the mound for the No. 26 team is RHP Drew Storen (6-0, 1.31 ERA, 68 K, 4 BB, 39 IP). No. 29 Torrey Pines (San Diego, Calif.) has emerged as the No. 1 team in the San Diego area. They are leading the Palomar League with a 9-1 record. William Penn (Newcastle, Del.) comes in at No. 30. They recently defeated three-time defending state champ St. Marks, 5-1. Pitcher Bret Oberholtzer allowed no earned runs in that game. They have won seven straight games recently. Dropped from the poll are A. Crawford Mosley, FL, and Catalina Foothills, AZ 25-3. .
