College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Sunday (May 21, 2006) THE WOODLANDS H.S. NO. 1 IN EASTON SPORTS COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — The Woodlands (The Woodlands, Tex.) remains No. 1 in the Easton National High School Poll with a 32-1 overall record. The Highlanders recently beat Klein H.S., 8-0 and 10-0 in the regional quarterfinals and continues its path to the 5A Texas state championship. Pitchers Steven Maxwell (11-0) and Kyle Drabek (11-0) pitched the two shutouts against Klein. Jackson H.S. (Mills Creek, Wash.) is heading into its final games of the state tournament with an unblemished record of 25-0. They move to the No. 2 spot after Owasso H.S. (Owasso, Okla.) lost its bid for another 6A Oklahoma state championship. The Rams lost to Union H.S., 4-3 in the title game and dropped to No. 13. Bellefontaine H.S. in Ohio won its third straight Division II district title and advances to the regional semi-finals this week. They are No. 3 with a 24-2 record. No. 4 James Monroe (Bronx, N.Y.) is undefeated at 16-0 in its league and is heading to the playoffs later this week. No. 5 Brenham H.S. (Brenham, Tex.) continues its bid for the 4A Texas state championship. Chatsworth (Chatsworth, Calif.) follows at No. 6. They will face San Fernando H.S. in the Los Angeles City Section semi-finals this week. They defeated Verdugo Hills, 7-0 and Wilmington Banning, 11-1 in the first two rounds. Junior Trent Jones pitched the shutout against Verdugo Hills. After two years of disappointment, No. 7 Msgr. Edward Pace (Opa Locka, Fla.) finally captured the 4A Florida state title after beating Bishop Kenney, 15-9. Adrian Cardenas went 5-for-5 and Chris Marrero hit a home run to help win the game. No. 8 Bellarmine Prep (San Jose, Calf.) has begun play in the sectional playoffs. Twelve different players on the team have contributed to a total of 40 home runs hit so far this season. Bishop Carroll Catholic (Wichita, Kan.) is No. 9. They recently won their regional and are headed to the state playoffs. No. 10 Riverside H.S. (Greer, S.C.) won its third state championship in four years. Sophomore LHP/OF Michael Roth (11-1, 1.85 ERA, 73 K, 24 BB) was named the 3A State Player of the Year. North Forsyth (Winston Salem, NC) comes in at No. 11. They beat East Rowan in the second round of the North Carolina 4A state playoffs and remain undefeated for the season at 28-0. No. 14 Flanagan (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) beat three of the four top 6A teams in Florida to win their division championship. They defeated Palm Beach Gardens in the regional semi-finals, Palm Beach Central in the regional final and Sarasota, 7-1 in the 6A championship game. Homer (Homer, Mich.) moves up to No. 15 and are still undefeated after outscoring their opponents, 291-23. No. 16 Christian Brothers (Memphis, Tenn.) are headed to their state playoffs. They have been lead by multi-position player Matt Packer who has set school records for strikeouts while on the mound and victories (12-0). When hitting, he has also set records for doubles, RBIs and tied for home runs. No. 17 Bishop Kelly (Tulsa, Okla.) beat Carl Albert H.S. for the state title. Dallas Keuchel has received several honors for the season. He has pitched in the last three state title games for Bishop Kelly with a 2-1 record, allowing only two runs in 20 2/3 innings. Elder (Cincinnati, Ohio) is No. 19 and will be facing Moeller H.S. in the regional semi-finals. No. 20 Chaparral H.S. (Scottsdale, Ariz.) won its fourth consecutive state championship. They were led by two of the top pitchers in the state, Charles Brewer (11-0) and Jason Jarvis (12-0). Goddard H.S. (Goddard, Kan.), No. 22, will enter the Kansas state tournament as the top seed. No. 24 Brownsburg H.S., Ind. has won seven of its last eight games and moves up in the poll. The team is led by SS T.J. Baumet (.516, 24 RBI, 9 SB) and RHP Drew Storen (7-1, 2.06 ERA, 81 K, 6 BB in 51 IP). Silverado H.S. (Las Vegas, Nev.) drops to No. 25 after losing in the state final to Bishop Gorman. Petal, Miss. also dropped in the poll to No. 26 after losing the 4A Mississippi title to Lafayette County, 6-0. Barbe H.S. (Lake Charles, La.) comes in at No. 28 after winning the 5A Louisiana state title. Barbe has nine consecutive 30-plus win seasons. They set a state record for the most wins in a season with 37. Archbishop Rummel dropped out of the poll after losing to Barbe in the semi-finals, 7-4. Jesuit H.S. also dropped after losing early in the state playoffs. William Penn (Newcastle, Del.) is No. 29 and undefeated in conference play with a 13-0 record. Pace, Fla. is No. 30 after winning the 5A state title. They fought off a deficit three times to beat Tampa Hillsborough, 11-7. Dropped from the poll are Archbishop Rummel (Metairie, La.) 33-5; Jesuit (New Orleans, La.) 30-6; Palm Beach Central (Wellington, FL) 29-2; Cherry Creek (Englewood, Colo.) 19-2; and Northwest Rankin (Brandon, Miss.) 31-6. Other top teams that just missed being in the poll are: La Cueva (Albuquerque, NM) 26-4, that recently won its fourth consecutive state title; Brophy Prep (Phoenix, Ariz.) 30-5, recently won the 5A Arizona state title; Fallbrook (San Diego, Calif.) 24-4, the No. 2 team in San Diego area; Jefferson (Shenandoah Junction, WV) 31-5, headed into the regional semi-finals with a 41 game win streak against West Virginia opponents over the past two years; and St. John Vianney (St. Louis, Mo.) 19-3, winners of 13 straight games entering the state playoffs.
