College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Saturday (April 8, 2006) NOVA H.S. NO. 1 IN EASTON SPORTS COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — Nova High School (Davie, Fla.) remains the No. 1 team in the Easton National High School poll as the Titans have rolled to a 19-0 record. Nova is well on its way to a possible repeat performance as Florida’s 5A state champions. Between this season and last, the Titans have posted a 50-1 record. The team features a strong pitching staff led by ace J.J. Housey with an 8-0 record. Throughout the season the Easton National High School poll can be found on www.baseballnews.com and also in Collegiate Baseball newspaper along with other high school news around the country. Moving into the No. 2 spot is The Woodlands (The Woodlands, Tex.) who are 11-0 in Texas District 14 and 21-1 overall. Highlander pitchers have been holding opponents to few runs, allowing its potent offense to score lots of runs. Pitchers Kyle Drabek and Steven Maxwell remain undefeated for the season. No. 3 Brownsburg (Brownsburg, Ind.) has kicked off its season with three wins and the No. 1 finish to the Hendrick’s County tournament. Sophomore RHP Mark Conover was the reliever for all three games and picked up two wins and save, giving up four hits, four walks and striking out 20 in nine innings. Bellefontaine (Bellefontaine, OH) moved up to No. 4 with a 6-0 record. In a recent game against Tecumseh, the Chieftains belted seven home runs, including three by SS Josh Wallace. They had 20 hits en route to a 27-3 win. No. 5 Owasso (Owasso, OK), 20-1, recently returned from a trip to Florida where they lost the last game of a very long trip. However during that trip, INF Pete Kozma was on fire, hitting .697 with six doubles, two triples, five home runs, 18 RBI and 15 runs scored. He is batting .587 for the season. Msgr. Edward Pace (Opa Locka, Fla.) falls to No. 6 after losing to 6A state champion Flanagan, 3-1. Pace was held to only three hits in the game which was a well touted match between two of South Florida’s best high school baseball teams. No. 7 Bellarmine Prep (San Jose, Calif.) continues to remain strong this season with a 16-1 record. In the last three games, junior RHP Ben Ruder has two wins and a save and has improved his record to 5-0 with a 2.40 ERA. Joliet Catholic (Joliet, Ill.) moves to No. 8 with an undefeated record. In the last six games, the Hilltoppers have scored 61 runs. The offense is led by Joe Benson (.591 BA) and Mark Siefert (17 RBI), who are the No. 3 and 4 hitters. James Monroe has improved to No. 9 and continues to beat up on all opponents in the New York City area. Brenham (Brenham, Tex.) has won its last 17 games and moves to the No. 10 spot on the poll. Recently senior pitcher Jason Gurka threw a perfect game, striking out 14 in a 14-0 victory over Waller. Archbishop Rummel has moved into the No. 1 spot in Louisiana recently over Jesuit. They are Nos. 14 and 15 respectively in the Easton national poll. Rummel has three pitchers who are undefeated this season in Robby Broach (7-0, 0.41 ERA), Brent Brignac (6-0, 1.05 ERA) and Dane Maxwell (5-0, 0.97 ERA). They are 5-0 in district play. No. 16 Riverside (Greer, SC) jumps into the poll after winning the Upstate Diamond Classic and the International Paper Classic. They have posted a glistening record of 21-1. Bishop Carroll Catholic remains the No. 1 5A team in Kansas and is ranked No. 17. Their offense is averaging over 10 runs a game. Ryan Jones, Josh Bird and Andy Jonas are hitting above .500 while Bird is averaging almost two strikeouts per inning in relief appearances. Jackson H.S. (Mills Creek, Wash.) has jumped into the poll at No. 18 after starting the season 9-0 with a 6-0 league record and the No. 1 ranking in Washington’s 4A division. They have outscored opponents, 90-13 in nine games. No. 19 A. Crawford Mosley (Lynn Haven, FL) won the Westminster Classic held in Florida for the second year in a row . In the first 15 games of the season, Mosley averaged 12 runs per game. Petal (Petal, Miss.) jumps in at No. 20 as the state’s top 4A team. No. 22 Riverside Poly (Riverside, Calif.) won its 20th league game in a row dating back to last season after its 4-1 win over John W. North H.S. LF Clay McElyea hit a grand slam in that game. No. 23 William Penn (Newcastle, DE) remains undefeated. Pitchers Rob Bryson and Brett Overholtzer have only given up seven hits in 30 innings. Darin Henry was hitting .600 with one double, three triples, three home runs and seven stolen bases. Dropping to No. 24 is Northwest Rankin (Brandon, Miss.). They lost a game in early rounds at the USA National Classic tournament in Tennessee. The tournament experienced bad weather and further results were not available at press time. Fallbrook (San Diego, Calif.) improves to No. 27 after winning 10 straight games. Catalina Foothills (Tucson, Ariz.) comes in at No. 29 after placing second behind Mosley H.S. in the Westminster Classic. Foothills is the top rated 4A team in Arizona. LHP Joey Rohe is 6-0 on the season with a 2.02 ERA, four complete games, 65 strikeouts, 18 walks in 45 innings. In three years, he has recorded 13 wins and no losses for the Falcons. Dropped from the poll are Russell County (Seale, Ala.) 18-6, Parkview (Lilburn, Ga.) 10-4, Mansfield (Mansfield, Tex.) 17-4, St. John Vianney (St. Louis, Mo.) 6-3, and Batesville (Batesville, Ark.) 14-3.
