College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Saturday (July 2, 2005) RUSSELL COUNTY H.S. NO. 1 IN EASTON SPORTS COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — Russell County (Seale, Ala.) remains in the No. 1 spot for the sixth consecutive time in the Easton Sports National High School poll after finishing with a 38-1 record. Russell County was led by a superb pitching staff which ended with a 0.77 ERA and 429 strikeouts, both Alabama state records. The team captured the 5A Alabama state championship. No. 2 Brownsburg H.S., Ind. went through its season with 35 straight wins. The Bulldogs captured the 4A Indiana state title with a 6-4 victory over Evansville North. They overcame four errors by turning a game ending 6-4-3 double-play. RHP Lance Lynn, who was recently drafted, threw a completed game, striking out 12, giving up 10 hits but only one earned run. The Bulldogs are only the
second team ever in Indiana High School baseball history to go undefeated and
win a state championship. The previous team was the 1978 Evansville Memorial
squad that was led by Don Mattingly to a All of the schools from the previous June 10 poll remain; however, they are slightly shuffled around. Two top 10 teams have dropped due to surprise losses in their quest for a state title. Ann Arbor Pioneer, Mich. dropped to No. 17 after a stunning 2-0 upset by Sterling Heights Stevenson. The shutout was the first time in 58 games that Pioneer didn’t manage to plate a run, a streak that dates back to the mid-2004 season. Sterling Heights only managed two hits against Pioneer ace Zach Putnam (10-1), but made them count. Putnam, who struck out nine in the game, gave up two earned runs in the first inning, doubling his total for the entire season. Stevenson’s pitcher, Paul Nieves beat Pioneer at both the plate and on the mound. Nieves hit a double to drive in the game’s only runs in that first inning. He pitched 6 solid innings backed by great defensive plays to help his team capture the title. Deering H.S. (Portland, ME) dropped to No. 18 after losing to Portland H.S., 9-6 in the Western Maine Class A semifinals. Deering went into the tournament as the two-time defending state Class A champions. Portland was inspired by the death of player Joey Martin’s grandfather two days before the game, according to the Portland Press Herald. Martin, a junior centerfielder, capped a six-run sixth inning with a three-run double. Moving up to No. 16 is Lockport, Ill. which won the Illinois Class AA title after beating Mt. Carmel, 8-4. It was the Porters first state title. Eric Sternberg hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning to break a 2-2 tie and help propel his team to the win. Matt Otteman earned the save for Lockport. No. 23 Bishop Hendricken (Warwick, RI) captured its third straight Division I championship and 13th baseball title in school history with a 4-1 victory over North Kingstown. Jim Gillheeney tossed a complete game for the Hawks, allowing only three hits. This is the third set of consecutive title wins for the Hawks in school history. The school won four straight titles from 1997-2000 and three in a row from 1987-1989.
