Two top 10 teams have dropped due to surprise losses in their quest for a state title. Ann Arbor Pioneer, Mich. dropped to No. 17 after a stunning 2-0 upset by Sterling Heights Stevenson. The shutout was the first time in 58 games that Pioneer didn’t manage to plate a run, a streak that dates back to the mid-2004 season. Sterling Heights only managed two hits against Pioneer ace Zach Putnam (10-1), but made them count. Putnam, who struck out nine in the game, gave up two earned runs in the first inning, doubling his total for the entire season. Stevenson’s pitcher, Paul Nieves beat Pioneer at both the plate and on the mound. Nieves hit a double to drive in the game’s only runs in that first inning. He pitched 6 solid innings backed by great defensive plays to help his team capture the title. Deering H.S. Martin, a junior centerfielder, capped a six-run sixth inning with a three-run double. Moving up to No. 16 is Lockport, Ill. which won the Illinois Class AA title after beating Mt. Carmel, 8-4. It was the Porters first state title. Eric Sternberg hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning to break a 2-2 tie and help propel his team to the win. Matt Otteman earned the save for Lockport. No. 23 Bishop Hendricken (Warwick, RI) captured its third straight Division I championship and 13th baseball title in school history with a 4-1 victory over North Kingstown. Jim Gillheeney tossed a complete game for the Hawks, allowing only three hits. This is the third set of consecutive title wins for the Hawks in school history.
