College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Tuesday (May 24, 2005) RUSSELL COUNTY H.S. NO. 1 IN EASTON SPORTS COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — Russell County (Seale, Ala.) has been ranked No. 1 for the fourth consecutive time in the Easton Sports National High School poll after finishing with a 38-1 record and winning the Alabama 5A state title. "It was a dream season for our team with our first state championship," said Head Coach Tony Rasmus. They beat Pinson Valley 5-1 and 7-0 in the championship title series. Russell County was led by a superb pitching staff which ended with a 0.77 ERA and 429 strikeouts, both Alabama state high school records. "The real exciting thing is that our top four pitchers return next year in Kasey Kiker, Cory Rasmus, Justin Dutton and Cody Dykes," said Rasmus. The top three players for the team, Kiker, Colby and Cory Rasmus, were named to pre- and post-season honors from various organizations. While many schools are in the midst of their state tournaments, some are just finishing up their regular season. Brownsburg, Ind. has moved up to No. 2 and remains unbeaten at 27-0, sweeping HCC foe Zionsville, 2-0 and 16-1, and claiming its first undefeated conference championship. Pitcher Lance Lynn improved his record to 10-0 in the 2-0 victory pitching his third no-hitter of the year. He struck out nine and walked one. Lynn has 118 strikeouts in 62 innings with a 0.80 ERA. No. 3 James Monroe, N.Y. (29-1) is the Bronx League Champions with a 16-0 record heading into the city league championships. Millard North, Neb. has moved up to the No. 4 position with a perfect 35-0 record. They are the state’s first unbeaten baseball team in Nebraska n their level since Omaha Northwest went undefeated in 1984. Millard North beat Omaha Westside, 10-6, for the state title. La Cueva, N.M. (No. 5) chalked up another 5A state championship recently and finished its season with a 27-1 record. Deering, Maine stumbled with one loss and now has a 12-1 record. The loss was its first in 44 games. Despite that, they are still outscoring their opponents 125-19. Their pitchers have a combined 1.12 ERA and while their hitters are batting .381. No. 7 Ann Arbor Pioneer, Mich., has a 28-1-1 record. Their 49 game winning streak dates back to the 2004 season which ended with a 5-3 loss to Chelsea. RHP Zach Putnam was 6-0 with a 0.22 ERA and has allowed one earned run and struck out 60 in 32 innings. LHP Casey Keenan was 4-0 with a 2.01 ERA. Mills Godwin, Va. has moved up to No. 8 with a perfect 19-0 record. Jumping into the poll at No. 10 is Riverside Poly, Calif., with a 23-3 record. They are No. 1 in the Los Angeles area polls and are undefeated at 15-0 in their league. Chatsworth, Calif. has dropped to No. 11 and is 28-3. No. 13 Northwest Rankin, Miss. swept Gulfport, 6-3 and 5-4 in the 5A Mississippi state championships. The Cougars won 14 of their last 15 games of the season and set a school record for wins at 36. Junior RHP Todd McInnis set a school record with 144 strikeouts for the season and was 12-1 with a 1.94 ERA. No. 14 Moody, Corpus Christi, Tex., has begun its battle to defend its 5A Texas state championship. No. 15 Houston Christian, Tex., ended their season at 36-2 and the TAPPS 5A state title. Poway, Calif. is still No. 1 in the San Diego area polls and is 14-1 in the Palomar League. They are ranked No. 16 going into the Southern CIF playoffs this week. Joining them is Rancho Bernardo at No. 17. Chaparral, Ariz., improves to No. 19 after defeating Catalina Foothills (Tucson, Ariz.) for the second year in a row to win the 4A Arizona state title. No. 21 Elder, Ohio has had a baseball program at the school since 1924. The 2005 Panthers have the school’s best winning percentage since 1973. They won their 26th district championship and are working toward its 11th Ohio state baseball title. The only loss in 25 games has been to La Salle. The Woodlands, Tex. at No. 22 has advanced to the regional championship. The team is lead by Kyle Drabek, whose father is Cy Young winner Doug Drabek. The junior right-hander improved to 11-0 recently. Coming into the poll at No. 26 is St. John’s (Washington, DC) which won the Catholic League title battling teams from DC, Virginia and Maryland. The school has won 20 or more games for 12 straight years. Owasso, Okla. dropped to No. 28 after losing to Union 5-4 in the 6A Oklahoma championship game. Parkview, Ga. has advanced to the state semi-finals and is ranked at No. 29. In the first seven games of the tournament. The Panthers have hit 16 home runs, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Dropping from the poll this week are Roswell, Ga., Catalina Foothills, Ariz., and Msgr. Edward Pace, Fla.
