College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Saturday (April 9, 2005) RUSSELL COUNTY H.S. NO. 1 IN EASTON SPORTS COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — Russell County High School (Seale, Ala.) has been ranked No. 1 for the first time this season in the Easton Sports National High School poll after rolling to a 26-0 record. Msgr. Edward Pace High School (Miami, Fla.), ranked No. 1 in the previous poll after posting a 14-0 record, slipped to 10th this week after losing twice and posting a 17-2 overall record. Russell County, which has a team batting average of .369 and team ERA of 0.81, has shut out 6 teams this season and run ruled 11 ball clubs in 26 contests. Leading the way offensively for the Warriors has been the brother combo of Cory and Colby Rasmus. Cory is hitting .570 with 13 homers while Colby is hitting .538 with 16 homers and 12 doubles. As far as pitching, Kasey Kiker is 7-0 with 101 strikeouts and only 15 walks in 52 innings and a 0.31 ERA. In a recent game against Marianna (Fla.) High School, Kiker struck out 20 batters in a 7 inning, 1-0 victory. Cory Ramus has also been outstanding with a 7-0 record, 61 strikeouts and 12 walks over 40 1/3 innings and a 0.63 ERA. James Monroe (Bronx, N.Y.) started its season undefeated at 11-0 despite the loss of pre-season All-American P Danny Almonte, who moved to Florida just prior to the season starting. They have improved to No. 2. Other undefeated teams in the top 10 include Roswell, Ga. 12-0 at No. 3 and Miami Southridge, Fla. 18-0 at No. 5. Southridge has six of its nine starting players hitting over .350 and three pitchers with ERAs under 1.00. Opposing teams are hitting a combined .168 against Spartan pitching while Southridge is hitting .374 as a team. No. 8 Rancho Bernardo (San Diego, Calif.) has won three tournament championships (Hilltop/Lolita, San Diego Lions – Classic Division, and North County) on its way to a 16-1 record for the season so far. In the recent North County tournament, P Brian Wilson threw two complete game shutouts for a combined 21 strikeouts. One was a two-hitter against Escondido and the other was a no-hitter against Valley Center. Pre-Season All-American John Drennen is hitting .509 with seven doubles, two triples, 11 home runs, 31 RBI and 29 runs for Rancho Bernardo. La Cueva, N.M. moves to No. 9 after losing a game to Rio Grande, N.M. The Bears broke the national high school winning streak record of 68 set 39 years ago and established the new record at 70 with a doubleheader sweep over Highland, N.M. Then the streak was snapped by Rio Grande, which defeated the Bears, 17-8. There was a controversy over this game as it had been postponed due to snow earlier in the season and the two coaches argued over when the game would be rescheduled. It was finally played on April 4. No. 11 Brownsburg, Ind. began its season at 4-0 and won the Hendricks County Tournament. Pre-Season All-American RHP Lance Lynn pitched a combined no-hitter along with RHP Matt Snyder in the championship game of the tournament. They defeated Danville, 7-0. Lynn struck out 14 of 15 batters while Snyder struck out 5 of 6. In the season opener, Lynn’s 93 mph fastball dominated as he struck out seven in four innings, helping defeat Mooresville, 13-0. Pioneer (Ann Arbor, Mich.) is No. 13 in this week’s poll. Pre-Season All-American Zach Putnam pitched a one-hitter against Brighton in the season opener, defeating them 11-0. He had 11 strikeouts and two walks. The game went only five innings due to the mercy rule. No. 14 New Hope (Columbus, Miss.) has outscored its opponents 210-37 and recorded seven shutouts while posting a perfect 21-0 record for the season. Nova (Davie, Fla.) at No. 15 also has a perfect record at 17-0. So far this season Pre-Season All-American P Pablo Lopez is 10-0 with two perfect games and William Block is hitting .570 with six home runs and 25 RBI. No. 17 Northwest Rankin (Brandon, Miss.) recently won the Battle at the Beach tournament in Gulf Shores, Ala., going through the tournament undefeated, 6-0, and beating three 5A ranked schools from Alabama. Both W.B. Ray (No. 18) and Moody (No. 19) from Corpus Christi, Tex. have dropped in the state poll. Both have suffered two losses this season. Moody’s two losses are to Ray. Catalina Foothills (Tucson, Ariz.) improved to No. 20 in this week’s poll and are now No. 1 in Arizona’s 4A state poll over rival Chaparral (Scottsdale, Ariz.), which has dropped to No. 30. Foothills won five games, including the championship game, in a recent tournament in Las Vegas. The Falcons have won 8 games in a row. Pre-Season All American RHP John James and INF Jim Dever have been leading the team in pitching and hitting respectively. In the last seven games, Dever has hit four home runs and has 16 RBI. No. 23 Houston Christian (Tex.) has won four tournaments this season (Houston Christian HS, Clear Creek, Barbe HS (La.) and Westminster (Fla.) March Madness). Esperanza (Anaheim, Calif.) comes in at No. 24. They recently won the National Classic and are ranked No. 1 among the Los Angeles area baseball teams. Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati, OH) is ranked No. 25 with a 6-1 record. Leading the team is Cameron Satterwhite, who was hitting .647 with two doubles, three home runs, 12 RBI and 12 runs. P Eric Surkamp is 3-0 with a 1.75 ERA, 30 strikeouts, five walks in 16 innings. Clovis West (Fresno, Calif.) comes in at No. 28. They recently beat rival Clovis, 7-0. P Mike Colla is 5-1 with a 0.95 ERA, 52 strikeouts in 37 innings. He throws in the low 90s. Dropping from the poll are Gulliver Prep (Coral Gables, Fla.) 15-5, Barbe (Lake Charles, La.) 25-4, Elk Grove (Elk Grove, Calif.) 10-4 and Farragut (Knoxville, Tenn.) 13-5.
