College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Tuesday (March 29, 2005) PACE H.S. NO. 1 IN EASTON SPORTS COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — Msgr. Edward Pace High School (Miami, Fla.) has been ranked No. 1 for the second straight Easton Sports National High School poll after rolling to a 14-0 record. Pace, which is hitting .385 as a team with 14 home runs, has relied on a superb defense and equally impressive pitching staff which has thrown six shutouts in 14 games and posted a team ERA of 1.41. "We have featured a very strong defense with great pitching so far," said Pace Head Coach Tom Duffin. "We are a senior dominated squad with 10 seniors. Nine of those kids have committed to colleges with seven signing to play for NCAA Division I universities. Our ball club has not played its best yet. We won the Mizuno Classic tournament in Miami against El Camino Real H.S. (Woodland Hills, Calif.). We are still coming together with our hitting getting better all the time." Duffin said the team has been led by two outstanding pitchers in RHP Thomas Mendoza and RHP Anthony Perez. Both have signed with the University of Miami, Fla. "Mendoza is projected to be a high draft pick with his fastball being clocked at 95 mph this season. He is currently 4-0 with a 0.60 ERA. In 23 2/3 innings, and has struck out 37 batters. As a first baseman, he is hitting .527 with 2 homers. Perez is 3-0 for us with a 2.00 ERA." Poll Notes: La Cueva High School (Albuquerque, N.M.), ranked fifth, raced to a 9-0 record to start the 2005 season. The Bears, defending national champions in the Easton National High School poll, ran the table last year with a 28-0 record and were sitting at 67 straight wins over the past three seasons. La Cueva was one win short of the national mark of 68 straight victories set by Archbishop Malloy (Briarwood, N.Y.) from 1963-66 as Collegiate Baseball went to press. No. 2 Russell County, 21-0, has belted 43 home runs led by Colby Rasmus with 15 and brother Cory with 13 and a 21-game hitting streak. Dropping this poll are Flower Mound (TX) 13-3, Mt. St. Joseph (MD), 5-2, The Woodlands (TX), 14-2, and Stratford (SC), 9-3.
