College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Tuesday (April 20, 2004) LA CUEVA H.S. NO. 1 IN EASTON SPORTS COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — La Cueva High School (Albuquerque, N.M.) has been ranked No. 1 for the third straight Easton Sports National High School poll. The Bears are 19-0 this season with a 49-game winning streak which stretches back to the semi-finals of the 2002 New Mexico state championship. Carlsbad H.S. won that contest, 6-5. The 49-game winning streak is believed to be a state record. Since the last poll two weeks ago, La Cueva has demolished every team in its path with eight more victories. The Bears have outscored opponents 114-11 during those eight contests. Through 19 games, La Cueva is hitting .432 with 37 homers, 55 doubles and 7 triples in addition to receiving 99 walks from opposing pitchers. The team has an incredible on-base percentage of .530. If that wasn’t enough, the offense has stolen 37 bases while limiting its opposition to only 11. As far as pitching, the staff has shut out opponents three times and held them to only one run six times. The pitching staff has struck out 133 batters in 19 games while walking only 42. The dominance of the Bears over New Mexico competition is shown by the team 10-run ruling opponents 13 times this season with La Cueva scoring in double digits 16 times. One key player for the Bears this season who has done it all is James Parr. He leads the pitching staff with a 6-0 record, 2.00 ERA along with 46 strikeouts and 9 walks. As a hitter, he has belted 7 home runs, 7 doubles, knocked in 36 runs and is hitting .525 on the season. "In our next game, we have a chance to win our 50th consecutive game," said La Cueva Head Coach Stan McKeever. "Fifty straight is something that you never dream about as a coach. In reflecting back over the streak, it is amazing how many different people have played a role in it. The success of our team and program has truly been a team effort, and I couldn’t be more proud of all the kids who have been part of this achievement over the past three seasons. I don’t know how it is at other schools around the country, but we have tremendous support from our administration as well." Poll Notes: Villa Park (Calif.) moves in the No. 4 spot after beating Crespi, 2-1, in the Toyo Tires National Classic champion-ship game. The Spartans won the tourna-ment with the help of pitchers Mark Trumbo and Alex Curry. Trumbo improved his record to 8-1. Crespi moved to No. 11 and formerly No. 2 Riverside (Greer, SC) dropped to No. 12 after coming in third place in the National Classic and losing to Crespi, 10-5, during the tournament. Riverside’s Brad Hocking went 9-for-13 in the tournament and Mark Young threw a three-hit shutout. No. 8 Westminster Academy (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) has a 16 game winning streak. Their only loss this season has been to Elkins HS, Tex. Since the top players have returned from an early season discipline issue, No. 16 Owasso has not lost a game. No. 18. Columbus (Ga.) has only recorded one loss so far this season. Pitcher Iain Sebastian is 6-0 and the latest hot hitter for the team has been Rick Bishop, who had three home runs and drove in 10 runs over the last three games. No. 21 Westhill (NY) started its season off well. Pre-Season All American Pitcher Pat McAnaney threw a no-hitter against Chitten-ango. He had 17 strikeouts and only one walk in the 8-0 victory. McAnaney also has thrown two one hitters and has 37 strikeouts in three games. No. 22 Norwich Free Academy (Conn.) and No. 23 Bishop Hendricken (RI) played each other at Cooperstown, NY recently with NFA winning the game. No. 24 Heritage (Colo.) is 11-0 in its league. Pitcher Luke French is undefeated at 6-0 and his fastball has been clocked at 91 mph. No. 26 Chaparral (Scottsdale, AZ) has remained a steady No. 1 position in the 4A state poll.
