College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (April 16, 2012)

LOUISIANA ST. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Louisiana St. (30-7) has been ranked No. 1 in the latest NCAA Division I baseball poll by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

It marks the first time this season the Tigers have been ranked No. 1. LSU, which swept a 3-game series against Alabama over the past weekend, has won six straight games and 13 of its last 14. The Tigers are tied for the top spot with Kentucky in the Southeastern Conference at 11-4.

Previously No. 1 ranked Kentucky fell to second after posting a 2-2 record last week. The Wildcats lost to Louisville but then won two of three on the road at Arkansas.

Poll Notes: In key top 30 action during the past week, Florida beat Florida St. to sweep the 3-game season series between the two teams. UCLA won two of three at Arizona and Oregon won two of three at Stanford. Several teams have been red hot. Baylor has won 19 in a row, one shy of the school record of 20 straight which was set in 1985. The Bears are first in the Big 12 Conference with a perfect 15-0 record. Purdue has won eight in a row, Texas Christian six straight and San Diego six consecutive while Sam Houston St. has won 14 of its last 15. Four teams fell out of the top 30 in Cal. Poly (1-3 last week), Florida Atlantic (2-2), Virginia (2-3) and Appalachian St. (1-3). New to the poll this week is Oklahoma (22-14, won 4 in a row), Texas Christian (20-13, tied for first in Mountain West Conference at 9-3), Missouri St. (27-10, first in Missouri Valley Conference at 6-2) and Oregon St. (23-11).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
