FLORIDA NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Florida (45-16) has been ranked No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Gators won the Southeastern Conference tournament over the past weekend with a 5-0 win over Vanderbilt in the championship game.

South Carolina, ranked No. 1 last week, slipped to fourth after finishing 1-2 in the SEC tournament.

No. 2 Virginia captured the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament with a 7-2 win over Florida St.

The Pac-10 race saw an exciting end to the regular season. Oregon swept Oregon St. in a 3-game series at home while Arizona swept a 3-game series at home against Washington, UCLA won two of three at Arizona St. and Stanford won two against California. UCLA finished No. 1 in the Pac-10 with an 18-9 conference mark and was followed by Oregon St. and Arizona St. with 17-10 Pac-10 records. Oregon St. finished the regular season with five straight losses.

Poll Notes: Several other teams have been hot. James Madison, which captured the Colonial Conference tournament, has won nine in a row. Coastal Carolina and Texas A&M have won five straight while Virginia has won four consecutive games.

Two teams fell out of the top 30 in St. John’s (3-2 last week) and Troy (2-1). New to the poll is Arizona (36-19, fourth place finish in the Pac-10 at 15-12), and Creighton (44-14), regular season Missouri Valley Conference winner as well as tournament champion.

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
