College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (May 16, 2011) VIRGINIA NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Virginia (45-6) has been ranked No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll. The Cavaliers, ranked No. 1 seven of the last eight weeks by Collegiate Baseball, won two of three at home against Miami (Fla.) over the past weekend. Virginia is first in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 22-5 league record and have a superb 2.24 team ERA with 513 strikeouts and 114 walks. The Cavaliers have a .981 fielding percentage with only 35 errors in 51 games and are averaging 7.5 runs by the offense. Poll Notes: Several other teams have been hot. Oklahoma has won nine straight, Texas A&M five in a row, U.C. Irvine eight of its last nine and Kent St. 13 of its last 14. In key top 30 matchups over the past weekend, Florida beat Vanderbilt two of three, South Carolina beat Arkansas two of three, and Georgia Tech. knocked off North Carolina two of three. No teams fell out of the top 30 which were ranked last week. Other teams that just missed being ranked were St. John's (30-17), Texas St. (34-17), Stanford (28-18), Troy (37-15), Mississippi St. (32-19), Florida International (35-16-1), Hawaii (30-21), Baylor (26-23), and East Carolina (34-17). The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season. (Top 30 Agate Follows)
