College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday (April 11, 2011)

VIRGINIA NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Virginia has been ranked No. 1 for the third straight week in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Cavaliers, winners of 12 of their last 13, won two of three at ninth ranked Georgia Tech. and has now won all five Atlantic Coast Conference series this season in rolling to a 13-2 ACC record, first in the league.

No. 2 ranked Vanderbilt has also been superb with a 30-3 overall record (tied for first in the Southeastern Conference at 10-2) and 10 wins in a row. Over the past weekend, the Commodores swept a 3-game series against Alabama.

Defending national champion South Carolina (26-5) is ranked third. The Gamecocks are also tied for the lead in the SEC with a 10-2 conference record after sweeping a 3-game series against Tennessee. South Carolina has won nine straight games.

Poll Notes: Several other teams have been red-hot. Oregon St. swept a 3-game series at home against Arizona St. to move into first place in the Pac-10 Conference with a 5-1 mark. The Beavers have won six in a row. With the trio of losses, ASU fell to fourth in the Pac-10 with a 5-4 record. Other teams with notable win streaks in the top 30 include Charlotte (7 wins in a row), Arkansas (5), and Stetson (5). Four teams that fell out of the top 30 in Alabama (5 straight losses), Louisiana St. (1-3 last week), U.C. Irvine (2-2), and New Mexico St. (2-2). New to the poll is Oklahoma St. (24-8), Miami, Fla. (21-11), Stetson (25-7) and Charlotte (26-6).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RHP Kyle Birdsall, Quinnipiac: Birdsall threw a no-hitter during a 6-0, 7-inning complete game against Monmouth. He fanned 12 batters and had a perfect game through 5 2/3 innings before issuing a walk.

LHP Ben Hawkins, West Florida: Hawkins hurled a 7-inning complete game no-hitter against West Alabama during a 2-0 win as he fanned 12 batters with two walks. It was the second no-no in school history.

LHP Tadd Johansen, Wayne State College (NE): Johansen threw a 7-inning no-hitter against University of Mary. He fanned 5 batters and faced the minimum 21 hitters. He allowed a walk in the fourth inning which was erased by a double play.

RHP Ricky Cramer, Cameron: Cramer threw a 7-inning no-hitter during an 11-0 win over East Central. He struck out five batters while walking four. Several superb defensive plays saved the no-no for Cramer.

RHP Trevor Bauer, UCLA: Bauer struck out 15 Washington State batters and walked two in leading the Bruins to a 10-3 win over the Cougars. He pitched a 9-inning complete game.

1B Logan Pierce, Troy: Pierce had a remarkable week as he hit 2 grand slams with 15 RBI over four games for the Trojans. He also hit .600 as he more than doubled his season RBI total during the week and was flawless in 34 fielding opportunities at first base.

SS Brad Miller, Clemson: Miller went 14-for-21 (.667) at the plate with 2 doubles, 2 triples, 7 RBI, 8 runs and 4-for-4 in steal attempts over five games. He also did not commit an error in 28 chances at shortstop which included several highlight-reel plays.
