College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday (March 28, 2011)

VIRGINIA NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Virginia has been ranked No. 1 for the first time this season in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s NCAA Division I baseball poll.

Florida, ranked No. 1 for the previous five weeks, fell to fourth after losing two of three at home to South Carolina.

Virginia (24-2 overall, 8-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) has won five straight and 18 of its last 19 games. The pitching staff has a 2.00 ERA with a better than 4:1 strikeout to walk ratio (289 strikeouts and 58 walks). The Cavaliers’ defense is fielding at a .986 clip and has committed only 14 errors over 26 games. On offense, Virginia is averaging 7.2 runs per game.

Poll Notes: Several other teams have been red-hot. Georgia Tech (21-4) has won 16 straight games and leads the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 9-0 record. North Carolina has won 9 in a row, Fresno St. 7 straight, Alabama 7 consecutive, Texas A&M 6 straight and California 6 in a row. In other key series over the past weekend, Vanderbilt beat Arkansas two of three, Texas lost two of three at Oklahoma St., Arizona St. won two of three against Arizona, Georgia Tech. swept a 3-game series against Miami (Fla.), Mississippi St. swept a 3-game series against Auburn, Southern Miss. beat Tulane two of three, and Wichita St. and Oregon split a 4-game series. Three teams fell out of the top 30 in Auburn (0-4 last week), Miami, Fla. (2-3) and Oregon (3-2). New to the poll this week is Alabama (18-7 overall, 5-1 Southeastern Conference), Central Florida (18-6 overall) and Mississippi St. (18-6 overall, 4-game winning streak).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RHP Trevor Bauer, UCLA: Bauer struck out 26 batters in two games last week over 16 innings. He fanned 14 batters in a 9-inning complete game 1-hitter against Southern California. Bauer carried a perfect game into the seventh inning before walking James Roberts with one out. His bid for a no-hitter was broken up with one out in the eighth inning. Earlier in the week, he fanned 12 batters over 7 scoreless innings in the second game of a doubleheader at Cal Poly.

SS Sean Jamieson, Canisius: Jamieson belted 4 home runs, scored 11 runs and knocked in 14 runs with four stolen bases over five games last week as he went 10-for-23 at the plate. He set a school record with 9 RBI in a win at Morehead St. and became the first Golden Griffin in 15 years to hit for the cycle.

3B Colin Moran, North Carolina: Moran hit 4 home runs, 3 doubles, 1 triple, scored 8 runs and knocked in 13 runs over five games last week. He was 9-for-17 at the plate and also walked 5 times.

1B Steve Ulaky, Delaware: Ulaky cracked 4 home runs, 2 doubles, scored 5 runs and knocked in 9 runs over four games last week as he went 7-for-14 at the plate. Against Delaware St., he tied an NCAA Division I record with two home runs in the eighth inning.

SS David Herbek, James Madison: Herbek went 9-for-20 as he belted 4 home runs, 4 doubles, scored 8 runs and drove in 9. He collected 25 total bases and was 4-for-4 in stolen bases.

LHP Andrew Chafin, Kent St.: Chafin struck out a career-high 15 batters during a 9-inning complete game, 1-0 win against Toledo. He walked none and recorded 88 strikes among the 113 pitches he threw.
