College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (March 14, 2011)

FLORIDA NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Florida has been ranked No. 1 for the fourth straight week in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Gators (14-2) were 4-1 last week with a loss to Georgia Southern, a victory over South Florida and three wins over Rhode Island. Florida equaled its most wins through 16 games in school history which was last done in 1992.

No. 2 Oklahoma (16-1) won 16 straight games to start the season before falling in its last game to Arkansas-Little Rock. Their 16-0 start was the best in program history and tied for the best start by a Big 12 team since the conference formed in 1997. The only other team in the league which has won their first 16 games was Texas in 2005.

Poll Notes: Several teams are on impressive win streaks. Virginia has won 10 in a row, Oregon St. 10 straight, Vanderbilt 9 consecutive and Georgia Tech. 7 in a row. In key series over the past weekend, Virginia swept a 3-game series at Clemson for the first time in school history. The Cavaliers became the first team since 2008 to shut out the Tigers in the opener which broke a streak of 148 games that Clemson had scored at least one run. Clemson, which fell from fourth to 16th this week, dropped all four games last week, including one to South Carolina. Louisiana St. swept a 3-game series at home against Cal. St. Fullerton. Arizona St. won two of three at Auburn. And Tulane won two of three at home against Wichita St. Four teams fell out of the top 30 in Rice (2-3 last week), James Madison (2-2), Nebraska (1-2) and Cal. St. Bakersfield (1-3). New to the poll this week is Oregon St. (13-3), Baylor (11-5, 6 wins in a row), College of Charleston (14-3) and California (10-4, 4 wins in a row).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
