College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday (Feb. 21, 2011)

FLORIDA NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Florida has been ranked No. 1 in the first regular season Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Gators (3-0) won three straight home games against South Florida to start the season and outscored the Bulls, 16-3 over the 3-game set. Over 27 innings, the Gator pitching staff gave up three runs, struck out 31 batters and walked only two.

Pre-Season No. 1 ranked Texas Christian (2-1) slipped to third after winning two of three against Kansas. TCU's lone loss was a 14-inning, 4-3 setback as the Horned Frogs left 18 runners on base.

No. 2 UCLA (3-0) started the season with two shutouts in its first three games against San Francisco. The Bruins limited the Dons to one unearned run and 12 hits over 27 innings.

Poll Notes: In key series over the weekend, Vanderbilt started the season with a 4-0 record. Three of the wins were against San Diego while the fourth was against San Diego St. Oregon dropped two of three at Hawaii. Stanford won two of three at Rice. Cal. St. Fullerton lost once to North Carolina and split two against Long Beach St. North Carolina (4-0) started the season on the road with wins against Cal. St. Fullerton, Southern California, Missouri and Cal. Poly.

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

SS David Herbek, James Madison: Herbek had a monster 4-game series against Bucknell as he belted 5 home runs, scored 7 runs and went 7-for-13 at the plate (.538 BA) as he knocked in 12 runs. Herbek also walked 4 times.

RHP Alex Meyer, Kentucky: The 6-foot-9 Meyer struck out 13 batters over seven innings and allowed only three hits against Miami (Ohio). He fanned 8 of the first 12 hitters he faced in the contest.

RHP Kyle Simon, Arizona: Simon struck out a career-high 13 batters over 7 2/3 innings against North Dakota St. He only allowed one hit in the contest and didn't walk a batter as struck out the side two times.
