College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday (April 4, 2011)

VIRGINIA NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Virginia has been ranked No. 1 for the second straight week in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Cavaliers, winners of nine in a row, are off to the best 30-game start in school history. Over the past weekend, Virginia swept a 3-game series against Virginia Tech and outscored the Hokies, 37-8.

Virginia has a remarkable team ERA of 2.00, and the staff has struck out 325 batters while walking only 64. The fielding percentage is .984 with only 18 errors in 30 games. The offense is scoring 7.5 runs per contest.

Poll Notes: Several other teams have been red-hot. North Carolina has won 12 of its last 13 contests. Cal. St. Fullerton has captured eight straight, Vanderbilt six consecutive while South Carolina, Arizona St., Southern Mississippi and Rice have won five in a row. In key top 30 series the past weekend, North Carolina swept three from Clemson, Oregon St. took two of three at Arizona, Southern Mississippi swept a 3-game series from Central Florida, Alabama won two of three from Arkansas, and Georgia swept a 3-game series from Mississippi St. Six teams fell out of the top 30, including Clemson (1-3 last week), Central Florida (1-3), Mississippi St. (1-3), Tulane (0-4), Wichita St. (1-3) and Stetson (2-2). New to the poll this week is Troy (22-5), Rice (21-11), Gonzaga (16-8-1), New Mexico St. (22-6), Connecticut (14-10-1) and Georgia (14-14, 6-3 in Southeastern Conference).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RHP Will Roberts, Virginia: Roberts recorded the eighth (9-inning) perfect game in NCAA Division I baseball since 1957 to lead Virginia to a 2-0 win over George Washington. He only needed 98 pitches to retire 27 consecutive batters to earn the second perfect game in Atlantic Coast Conference history. It was the 19th perfect game of any length in NCAA Division I history and the first in Virginia annals. The perfecto also was the first complete game of Roberts’ career as he struck out 10 batters.

OF Victor Roache, Georgia Southern: Roache had a monster week at the plate as he blasted 6 home runs over 4 games as he went 11-for-18 with 13 RBI and 10 runs scored.

RHP Kyle Winkler, Texas Christian: Winkler struck out 15 Air Force batters over 7 innings during a 10-2 TCU win. He only walked one and gave up four hits.

2B Lonnie Kauppila, Stanford: Kauppila went 15-for-20 for the Cardinal over four games, including 8 runs scored, 6 RBI and a trio of doubles. During one game against Washington St., he went 6-for-6 at the plate with 4 RBI and 3 runs scored.
