College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Thursday (July 1, 2010)

SOUTH CAROLINA NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — South Carolina is ranked No. 1 in the final 2010 Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Gamecocks, fresh from winning the College World Series in Omaha, dropped its opener to Oklahoma, 4-3, but then won six straight games to capture its first national championship in baseball.

South Carolina's pitching staff was remarkable as it posted a 2.15 ERA over seven games and struck out 57 batters with only 12 walks. Fielding by the Gamecocks was also stellar as South Carolina posted a .979 fielding percentage, the best of any ball club in the 8-team College World Series field. In addition, the Gamecocks turned seven double plays to lead all teams.

On offense, South Carolina recorded a number of crucial hits at key times to pull out wins.

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
