College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

ARIZONA STATE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona State University is No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Sun Devils, ranked first for the seventh time this season by Collegiate Baseball, won two of three at Stanford and replaced Texas at the top of the poll after the Longhorns lost three straight games at the Big 12 Conference tournament to Missouri, Texas Tech. and Texas A&M.

Arizona State is hitting .340 as a team and averaging 8.6 runs per game. Almost half of their hits have been for extra bases and includes 56 homers, 131 doubles and 36 triples. In addition, ASU has stolen 123 of 160 bases while holding opponents to only 40. The pitching staff has a 3.16 ERA and has fanned 484 batters with 147 walks.

Poll Notes: Several other teams have been superb. Louisiana State, which finished eighth during the Southeastern Conference regular season, rolled through the SEC Tournament with four consecutive wins to win the title. Texas A&M was equally impressive at the Big 12 Conference Tournament with four straight victories to win the title. The Aggies have now won six in a row overall and 12 of their last 13 games. Coastal Carolina has won 15 of its last 16 while Cal. St. Fullerton has won 14 of its last 15 and Texas Christian 7 straight. Three teams fell out of the poll this week in Fresno St. (3-2 last week), Florida Gulf Coast (1-2 last week) and Oregon (1-3 last week). New to the poll is LSU, California (won two of three at Oregon and St. John’s (won Big East Conference tournament).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

2B Raymond Church, Florida Atlantic: Church belted 4 home runs and recorded 13 RBIs during a 4-game span at the Sun Belt Tournament as he went 11-for-21 at the plate with 10 runs scored. During an 18-16 loss to Florida International, he tied an FAU all-time record and broke a Sun Belt Conference Tournament single-game record with 9 RBIs as he hit 2 home runs and went 4-for-6, including a game-tying home run in the ninth.

LHP Justin Wright, Virginia Tech.: Wright recorded a career-high 15 strikeouts during a complete game, 6-2 win over Georgia Tech. He only gave up 4 hits in the contest. His strikeout total was the most for a Virginia Tech pitcher since the 2005 season.

LHP Matt Purke, Texas Christian: Purke fanned 14 batters during a 13-2 win over Utah during the Mountain West Conference Tournament. He allowed only 4 hits while walking 3 over 7 innings. Purke’s strikeout total is the second highest in MWC tournament history, ranking only behind San Diego State’s Ben Julianel who struck out 16 against Air Force in 2001.

C Marty Mullins, U.C. Santa Barbara: Playing for the first time in a month because of an injury, Mullins hit 3 home runs and collected 6 RBIs with 5 runs during a 3-game series against Pacific as he went 6-for-11. He was hit by a pitch on May 1 against U.C. Riverside which broke his left hand. Mullins had the cast removed two days before the Pacific series, and in his first two at bats since breaking his hand, he launched a pair of home runs. Two days later in the final game of the series, he hit a 3-run homer in the 10th inning to lead the Gauchos to an 8-5 win.
