College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday (May 24, 2010)

TEXAS NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Texas has been ranked No. 1 for the fifth straight week in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Longhorns (46-8) have won 28 of their last 29 games. The 24 wins in Big 12 Conference play (24-3) set a new league record. Over the past weekend, Texas swept a 3-game series against Missouri. The Longhorns lead the nation with a 2.39 ERA and have compiled 478 strikeouts and 150 walks over 54 games. On offense, Texas has hit 71 homers and stolen 81 bases while limiting opponents to only 33 stolen bases in 53 chances.

Poll Notes: Several other teams played well lately. UCLA has won nine consecutive Pac-10 games. Oklahoma has won seven straight. And Washington St. has won eight of its last nine Pac-10 games. In key series over the past weekend, Virginia won two of three at Miami, Fla., Florida won two of three at South Carolina, Auburn swept a 3-game series at Mississippi, and Arkansas won two of three at Vanderbilt. Four teams fell out of the top 30 this week in Virginia Tech. (swept in a 3-game series by North Carolina), California (0-4 last week), Arizona (1-3 last week) and Kansas St. (1-2 last week). New to the poll is Stanford (won two of three at Arizona), Texas A&M (won two of three against Kansas St.), Florida Gulf Coast (won regular season title in Atlantic Sun Conference with 25-5 league mark), and Oregon (won two of three against Washington).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RHP Tim Boyce, Rhode Island: Boyce tossed his third consecutive complete-game shutout as Rhode Island downed George Washington, 7-0. It extended his scoreless innings streak to 34, the longest in NCAA Division I baseball this season. He had a no-hitter broken up with two outs in the eighth as he scattered three hits while fanning seven.

SS Darnell Sweeney, Central Florida: Sweeney was 11-for-13 at the plate during a 3-game series at Tulane. He racked up 4 doubles, one homer and 10 RBI.

OF Kole Calhoun, Arizona St.: Calhoun went 6-for-12 at the plate with 3 homers, 7 RBIs and 6 runs scored as he posted a 1.333 slugging percentage. He was on base another six times via walks giving him an on-base percentage of .667 over four games for the week.

3B Jesse Sawyer, South Dakota St.: Sawyer belted 4 home runs with 14 RBIs over six games last week. He also walked 7 times as he went 7-for-18 at the plate.
