College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday (May 17, 2010)

TEXAS NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Texas has been ranked No. 1 for the fourth straight week in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Longhorns (43-8) have won 25 of their last 26 games. Over the past weekend, Texas beat Louisiana Tech. twice. Texas leads the nation with a 2.27 ERA and features a pitching staff that has a 3:1 strikeout (448) to walk (143) ratio.

Poll Notes: Several other teams have been exceptional. Virginia has won 14 in a row, Coastal Carolina 26 of 27, Florida 11 of 12, and Cal. St. Fullerton 14 of 15. In key series over the past weekend, Georgia Tech. beat Miami, Fla. two of three. Arizona St. and Arizona split the first two games of their 3-game series. South Carolina swept a 3-game series at Arkansas, and Rice beat Southern Mississippi two of three. Two teams fell out of the top 30 in Pittsburgh (2-2 last week with losses to Duquesne and Cincinnati) and Texas St. (1-3). New to the poll is Washington St. (won 6 of last 7, including 3-game sweep against California and two wins in three games at Stanford) and Arizona (split two games with Arizona St.).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RHP C.J. Huyett, Old Dominion: Huyett fired the 13th no-hitter in Old Dominion history during an 18-0 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore. He walked one and struck out 11 as he faced only one batter over the minimum during the 9-inning game. The only Hawk to reach base was Bryan Chaikowsky who walked with two outs in the fourth inning.

LF Jeremy Baltz, St. John’s: Baltz batted .500 (9-for-18) with 5 home runs, 2 doubles and 9 RBIs over four games last week. The highlight of the week came during an 8-5 win over Louisville as he belted 4 home runs with 7 RBIs.

RHP Jordan Cooper, Wichita St.: Cooper struck out 14 batters during a 3-0, complete game win over Missouri St. He didn't walk a batter and fanned at least one batter in every inning. He also improved his scoreless streak to 27 1/3 innings which dates back to April 23.

RHP Matt Bischoff, Purdue: Bischoff retired 23 consecutive Illinois hitters at one point during an 8-2, complete game victory over the Illini. He retired the side in order from the second through the seventh innings.

3B Anthony Rendon, Rice: Rendon hit .588 (10-for-17) in four games last week with 4 home runs and a double as he registered 23 bases and a 1.353 slugging percentage. He also had 10 RBIs. Defensively, he was perfect in 15 chances from his spot in the hot corner.

SS B.A. Vollmuth, Southern Mississippi: During a 3-game series against Rice, Vollmuth hit .615 (8-for-13) as he belted 4 home runs with 11 RBIs, 6 runs scored and 21 total bases.

1B Ben Thomas, Xavier: Thomas hit 4 home runs and drove in 11 RBIs during a 3-game sweep of Massachusetts.
