College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (April 12, 2010)

ARIZONA STATE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona St. is ranked No. 1 for the fifth straight week in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Sun Devils (28-3, 6-3 Pac-10 Conference) were 3-2 last week as ASU knocked off San Diego twice in mid-week games and lost two of three at Washington St. The Sun Devils are still No. 1 in the Pac-10 Conference with a 6-3 record.

Poll Notes: In one of the strangest weeks in years, the top four ranked teams in the nation last week lost two games each during the past rating period (Arizona St., UCLA, Georgia Tech. and Louisiana St.). In fact, seven of the top 10 teams from last week's poll lost two or more games in the past week.

Despite that, there were several winning streaks of note. Texas has won 8 straight along with Coastal Carolina, Virginia Military Institute and California. Arkansas has also been red hot with 6 consecutive wins. In top 10 matchups over the past weekend, Virginia knocked off Georgia Tech. two of three while UCLA beat Oregon St. two of three.

Five teams fell out of the poll this week in U.C. Irvine (1-3 last week), New Mexico St. (2-1-1), Rice (2-2), N.C. Charlotte (2-2) and N.C. State (3-2). New to the poll this week is Auburn (won two of three against LSU), Pittsburgh (won two of three against Louisville), Virginia Tech. (won two of three against Miami, Fla.), Fresno St. (20-13, 3-1 in Western Athletic Conference), and Washington St. (won two of three against Arizona St., first time in school history Cougars have won a series against Sun Devils).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
