College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Friday (June 27, 2008) FRESNO ST. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — Fresno St. (47-31), winner of the College World Series, finished as the No. 1 team in the final Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll. The Bulldogs beat Georgia, 6-1 in the championship game of the CWS. It marked the first College World Series title for Fresno St. and second national title in school history. The only other national championship took place in 1998 in softball. The Bulldogs were the fifth straight national champion that was not a national seed. Prior to 2004, the previous five champions dating back to 1999 were all national seeds. Entering the 64-team tournament, Fresno St. was a No. 4 regional seed. The Bulldogs were the lowest seed to ever win the College World Series and the first to lose 31 games in a season. The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season. (Top 30 Agate Follows)
