College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday (May 5, 2008)

MIAMI, FLA. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Miami, Fla. (39-5) has been ranked No. 1 for the third straight time in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Hurricanes swept a 3-game series against St. Mary’s (Calif.) over the past weekend and have now won six straight games and 11 consecutive series. Miami is hitting .337 with 67 home runs and 79 stolen bases in 44 games. The pitching staff has a 3.80 ERA with 394 strikeouts and 134 walks.

Poll Notes: Several other teams have been red hot. New Orleans has won 9 straight while Louisiana St. has won 9 in a row as well. The Tigers have swept their last two Southeastern Conference series against South Carolina and Kentucky. Five teams fell out of the top 30 this week, including Kentucky (1-3 last week), Oregon St. (0-4), Southern Mississippi (3-2), Long Beach St. (1-2) and North Carolina Wilmington (2-2). New to the top 30 this week is St. John’s, East Carolina, Louisiana St., New Orleans and Washington.

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RHP Kenn Kasparek, Texas: Kasparek pitched the 20th no-hitter in school history against Texas State last Tuesday and faced the minimum 27 hitters for the first time in school history. He hit one batter in the game, but induced a double play from the next batter. He bounced back five days later to pitch eight scoreless innings against Baylor. He gave up just three hits and one walk. Overall on the week, he fanned 18 batters over two games with nine in both contests and one walk.

1B Josh Mazzola, Missouri State: Mazzola had one of the most prolific offensive weeks in school history as he belted six home runs over four games and collected 14 RBIs. He scored eight times and hit .533 (8-for-15) with 26 total bases.
