College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday (May 26, 2008)

MIAMI, FLA. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Miami, Fla. (47-8) has been ranked No. 1 for the fifth time in the last six weeks in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Hurricanes captured the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament over the past weekend with wins over Clemson, Georgia Tech., N.C. State and Virginia in going unbeaten. North Carolina, ranked No. 1 last week, slipped to fourth after posting a 1-2 record during the past polling period.

Poll Notes: Several other teams have been red hot. Louisiana St. won its 20 straight game, the longest winning streak in school history, in capturing the Southeastern Conference tournament with four consecutive victories over South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Alabama and Mississippi. Texas Christian has won 14 of its last 15 games. Coastal Carolina and Texas have won 8 of their last 9 as both teams won conference tournament titles over the past weekend. Wichita St. has won six straight. Arizona won two key Pac-10 series the last two weekends with series victories over Stanford and Arizona St. Three teams fell out of the top 30 this week in Georgia Tech. (1-2 last week), Alabama (2-2) and N.C. Wilmington (1-2). New to the poll is Arizona, Vanderbilt and Virginia.

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

3B Conor Gillaspie, Wichita St.: Gillaspie led the Shockers to the Missouri Valley Conference tournament title as he was named Most Valuable Player. In three games, he went 9-for-13 at the plate with 3 homers, 12 RBI, 7 runs scored and 1 double. In the championship game, he went 4-for-5 with 2 home runs, 3 runs scored and tied a career-high with 5 RBI.

DH/OF Blake Dean, Louisiana St.: Dean, the Most Valuable Player in the Southeastern Conference tournament, led the Tigers to the SEC tournament title as he belted 3 homers, 9 RBI and scored 5 runs as he went 7-for-16 at the plate. He hit a walk-off solo homer in the 10th inning to lift LSU to a 5-4 first round win over South Carolina. He then hit a grand slam in a semi-final victory over Alabama and followed that up with a 2-run blast in LSU's championship-game win over Mississippi.
