College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (May 19, 2008)

NORTH CAROLINA NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — North Carolina (45-10) has been ranked No. 1 for the first time this season in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Tar Heels beat Miami, Fla., ranked No. 1 the previous four polls, two of three games over the past weekend at Miami. North Carolina, which has won 3-game series against Florida St. (ranked No. 1 at the time) and now Miami, becomes the third Atlantic Coast Conference team to be ranked No. 1 this season.

Poll Notes: Several other teams have been red hot. Louisiana St. has won 16 straight, the third longest winning streak in school history. The Tigers have captured 12 consecutive Southeastern Conference games. Rice has won 10 straight and 22 of its last 23 games. Texas Christian, which captured the Mountain West Conference regular-season title with a 19-5 record, has won 10 in a row and 17 of its last 18. Texas, which had been struggling for most of the season, swept a key 3-game series against Texas A&M which had already captured the Big 12 Conference regular-season title. The Longhorns have now won 6 straight and 9 of their last 10 as Texas moved up to fifth place in the Big 12 Conference. Six teams fell out of the top 30 this week, including Vanderbilt (0-3 last week), New Orleans (0-4), Tulane (0-3), Virginia (2-2), Southern Mississippi (1-3) and Washington (0-3). New teams to the poll this week include Florida, Long Beach St., Texas, Texas Christian, Alabama and N.C. Wilmington.

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RHP Scott Swinson, Maryland: Swinson threw the sixth no-hitter in University of Maryland history, striking out a career-high 10 batters in a 4-0 win over Delaware.
